no PC - double stack BRF 1/2pint jars...?

saving up for a cooker at the moment...

Are there any precautions towards keeping everything clean SWIM could take?

All-in-all SWIM just wants to do things right, and if it doesn't work, do things right again. SWIM's patient and just wants to learn the process and get good at it.

never put your work on or near the floor. I dont remember the exact statistic, but a huge percentage of bacteria and dust in your home are floating within 3 feet of the floor.

Add salt too the water your steaming with until no more dissolves to raise it's boiling temperature.

Micro-pore tape over your inoculation holes might help stop things getting into your dry vermiculite barrier and shouldn't inhibit gas exchange.

The longer the steaming the better, i usually do 1 hour 30 mins - 2 hours.

After you make your jars and cover with foil you will steam them. Steam them for 60-75 minutes. I wouldn't stack them. Also try and steam them in a rack out of the water if possible. If that's not possible make sure that you raise the jars so that they are out of the water. Don't start counting down the time until the water starts to boil.

As far as never keeping any project on the floor..... Mine have always been on the floor with no problems. They were in rubbermaid containers on the floor.

I got a giant 24 qt or so pot with a rack at Kmart for $20. It works great.
