Tyvek and/or polyfil lid setups are superior to holes imo. For me the ultimate lid is silicone sealed tyvek patch over middle hole (both sides of lid) and 4 siliconed holes for syringe injections.

These lids last a long time , are good FAE and help prevent contams.

depends on the quality of the tyvek used.
that post office stuff is mostly paper
and i don't like it, quit using it long ago.
polyfil is a synthetic fiber too
so it shouldn't support growth,
the main problem folks have with polyfil is that it protrudes into the jars,
making it easy to get it wet when shaking jars.
now if the water contains nutes,
that will cling to the polyfil and
yep, contams will grow down thru it
into the jar.
tyvek is flat and so is easier protected from such.
i personally use a three-part filter on my qts,
a layer of good tyvek on top the lid,,
then a polyfil plug for the lid hole,
then another layer of tyvek under the lid.
the layer under the lid compresses the polyfil, keeping it up high and is water-resistant
so the polyfil is protected.
then the polyfil acts as a filter
after the tyvek is punctured by injection,
extra redundancy but my environ is very high contam so extra precautions pay off.

if left long enough, any amount of molds can and will grow.
the mold species will grow on top of eachother even. trust me i know. :redface: lol.....

i have left cups half full of soda on a countertop for 6mths unattended then came back after living away from this spot for that time, and saw the grotesque display of fantasmagorical typa shit happening in there. no. excuse me. creeping out of there. word. CREEPING ITS WAY OUT OF THE FUCKING CUPS ONTO NEARBY FOOD SOURCES (cardboard boxes).
yes, folks... the molds' mycelial structure took the form of 'arms' physically reaching to grow out of the cups creeping out into the real world.
this shit is very scary.

and i still havent cleaned it up? um. yeah....i know the reprocussions...

..im *DEATHLY* afraid to disturb the colony(*S*) thereby releasing massive amts of various spores into that room! its inevitable!
so ive thrown a sheet of towel over the mess, and i just spray some lysol in the area above the cups when i pass by every day or every other day, until i do find my masks that are packed up from my move (shit i should use my gas mask for christs sake! ) and my gloves, tyvek fucking suits...etc... and then ill CAREFULLY bag up the cups etc into double plastic bags and dispose of outside, again, very carefully--
cuz i can MORE THAN GUARANTEE there are dangerous, noxious, toxic, carcenogenic even spores involved here. gotta be. no doubts. hell, with a rainbow like this and with the tenacity theyve got. shit.....no way theyre not literally hell's angels those nasty fucking monsters.

the colors range from red to blue to black to yellow to orange/rust to white to brown to green slimes and powdery versions of all the above mentioned colors as well. dont forget the various shades of the above mentioned spectrum of colors lol. given the spores in the air, they will indeed take advantage and grow wherever they have a chance when they land on something they thinks tasty. even if it IS another organism (ie: your spawn jars there )
