![]() | Woodlover Subaeruginosa cake Here is a picture of a brf cake psilocybe subaeruginosa. It was going to mother some woodchip bags before my foaf noticed what looks like primorida/pinning(?) all over. A couple of the larger spots seem to have a hole in the middle of them where it is retreating back into the cake.. Im sure he's scratching his head, as he remembered reading that woodlovers resist pinning of cakes. Is that usually the case? Would it still be ok to use a cake like that for spawn if its trying to grow shrooms already? Also, why would the upper right hand corner have colonised so weakly, given that the rest of the cake is getting along? Thanks Shinobi xx |

![]() | That doesn't look like pins to me, more like waste. Waiting a couple of days can't hurt to see how it develops. I would still use that cake as spawn. Does the mycelium seem to avoid the uncolonised area, stopping growth when it reaches it, or has it just not gotten around to that area yet? Bacteria can cause mycelium to avoid substrate I hear. Maybe that area is a little dry or something. I would wait a few days to see how things go. |

![]() | Thankyou Phidell, The barely colonized area has been like that for several weeks. I figured it would fill in, but never went further than a light white. I just had a closer look at another tray this morning, and at the bottom of the tray was a small pool of liquid the same colour as the jar. Are some species more prone to these waste matters, or might it have been an incubation or substrate issue? |

![]() ![]() ![]() | It's normal to see a yellow excretion [metabolites] especially with mature active mycelium, just not sure why some do more than others..Could be a reaction to contaminants present as it's been reported that the piss inhibits mold growth.. I would just remove the uncolo'd section when birthed/spawned... Many woodmunchers fruit better in a microbially active environment rather than sterile.. |
