Question I have 2 questions! Jars cooling & what is this?

    1st question:

Only being able to cook a batch in the morning and one at night can be a real pain in the butt!.....so do the jars have to be cooled down before removing from the pressure cooker to put into the glovebox?

Or can I take them out of the p.c. as soon as the lock goes down?

Please help! I know I can not inoculate while hot but I do not know if taking them out of the pc while hot will do any harm!

    Thanks

    2nd question:

What is a home canner and what can it be used for in this hobby?
I have 2 big ones and 1 small one and I was wondering if I can use them for pasturizing or anything like that? (These are not pressure cookers)

    Thanks

I would wait maybe an hour before taking the jars out of the PC. You don't want them to shatter.

As far as the canner, is it possibly a steam pot? You can do quite a lot with that, but nothing beats a PC for this hobby. You can pasteurize with a big pot, though.

I am not sure what it is..........The label says

    "Can-Well Home Canner & Preserver"

But I know it is not like my pressure cooker so I was wondering what it was and what it could be used for!

if you are just doing brf half pints then a canner is perfectly fine. but if you want to go further than that, you'll want a PC

Is it just a big pot with a lid? Or does it have a rubber seal and/or pressure gauge or knocker? I don't like sterilizing PF jars in a steam pot, but it will work.

That's all I've ever used to sterilize BRF jars and so far am 100% with my sterilizing. I'm going to get a nice PC, but that will be for grains, I doubt that I will ever use it for BRF cakes.

It is just a big pot with a lid! It also has a rack to hold jars that goes inside.........

Ok, I understand I can use this thing to sterilize 1/2 pint vermiculite/brf
jars........and this is cool, but how do I use it to do that? Do I just put the jars in the rack and boil the water for an hour or is that wrong?

Also, can I use it for pasturizing steer manure? If so, how do I use it?
Do I treat it like a regular pot and put my manure in a pillowcase and bring it up to temp and keep it there for 1/2 - hour then strain and use or is that wrong too?

I really appericiate everbodys help, Thank You very much!

My big pot is pretty big. I can fit 12 jars in the rack. If I were to stack the jars I could fit about 27 jars or something. I prefer not to stack though, I think it does a better job not stacking. You put 2-3 inches of water in the pot. Put the jars in the rack. The water lever should be below the bottoms of the jars by a couple of inches. Put the lid on it and boil the water. The pot will sound like it is boiling when in fact it isn't yet (mine gets pretty loud). You have to make sure the water is in fact boiling before you start counting down the time. Then steam them for 60-70 minutes. I have NEVER had a problem with 1 jar sterilizing them this way. As for your other question.... I don't know, someone else will have to help you out on that one.

Don't forget to put tinfoil on the lids and securely fasten the lids tightly.

For my very first grow I used the steam sterilization method, which worked; I lost a few jars from just being a newbie. Since I have gotten lazier over the years in my prep methods, I like the security of PC'ing jars. Even with that, there are no guarantees.

You could use your big pot for pasteurization. Look through the vaults--there's a ton of stuff on the pillow case technique.
