![]() | just picked, newbs first B+ apologies, the pictures didn't stay shrunk after he shrunk them in the post editor, and then posted. Pf tek, one of hippie's incubators, rubbermaid and perlite. once a day misting. would opening the lid for FAE a few times a day help my friend's friend make these bigger? None the less he's stoked on getting anything. Someday he will repay all of you for your advice. He applauds you.Just before innoculation..,. He feared that the slightly cooked BRF (seen below as white) was contamination, even though the newbie didn't consider this was nearly ten minutes after pressure cooking. ![]() dates are off... this is about 6 days later ![]() about three weeks after innoculation. ![]() he lost about half of these jars, the ones in the front all made it. he exposed them to too much light, making premature pinning occur. due to this mishap he chronic tek'd with on dunk or DEC the one on the left to get these. ![]() by now the dates are almost correct, but a day behind. these were today, the 12th. he is happy to see a 12g freshie on a first try first flush. His half-brother's father always said to dry mushrooms, hang them in the dark for three days and three nights, because that's what Jesus did. ![]() one of the cakes seems to be doing just fine, the others seem to only have one to three specimens on them. This is the same cake the 12g came from. ![]() he's expecting a decent size one out of this pin? ![]() once again, he is in gratitude, will send his prayer, and will someday pay all of you his respect individually. woot woot, that's the first and for sure not the last.

![]() ![]() ![]() | From looking at those cakes I would say that you need to give them a good 24 hour dunking and from the first couple pics i see where it says that after 3 weeks after incoulation there was minimal growth. There could be a couple causes for this one your syringe was light on spores or 2 there isn't or wasn't enough FAE or not all jars are at the same tempature but, IME you have alot better and stronger results with a MS LC meaning that instead of knockin up jars with your spore syringe you inject say 2 to 5 cc's of it into this LC described below using sterlie Teks of course. Here is a good newbie starter LC Tek for ya Use 1 Level Teaspoon of Light Corn Syrup (Karo Syrup or the "no-name" store brand of Light Corn Syrup) per 100 ml of purified water. Mix it well to distribute the heavy syrup into the water. You can use an empty syringe to measure out 100cc, many jars are graduated The Karo jar is made up and Sterilized with a solid dome lid, inverted so that the seal side is up (we don't want to can it) and the band screwed on loosely. Foil Cover of course. PC time is 20 minutes. To shoot the jar you place it in the Glovebox, remove foil, band, and lid, and shoot directly into the liquid. Inoculate at the rate of 1 cc spores per 100 cc Karo Solution. You can pre-sterilize some extra jar lids wrapped in foil and you open one in the glove box and place the clean dry lid on the jar mouth with the seal side _down_. Screw the band on tight and replace the foil cap. Incubate, in a 7-10 days you are ready to shoot dozens of jars... Karo jars prepared in this fashion can be shaken vigorously without leaking or contam problems. Everytime you open a jar in the glovebox you always replace the dome lid with a clean sterilized one, seal side down. It's a super Tek that gets around the problems with honey. Karo is cheap, easy, and to the point. All you need to grow out and shoot is a mass of mycelium about the size of a quarter in 100cc of liquid but, the more mycelium the quicker the colonization and the better it seems to fruit. What you are looking for is wispy, puffy, sometimes ropy white stuff that clumps and hangs on the bottom. You should shake and/or swirl the jar on occasion to try to keep the mass broken up. Before drawing up syringes to shoot jars thrash the mycelium with the needle and break it up (it fragments very easily at this stage). The solution in the syringe need not be dense... But you should see plenty of tiny little "floaties" in there... It's all you need. Shooting Dextrose/Karo Tek early helps in a few ways: it saves time; it prevents heavy clumping which can clog standard spore gauge needles; the residual sugar, freshly macerated tissue, and change of media gives a "hot" inoculation, showing growth in 24 hours under incubation; and the cultures appear to store better when fridged. The longer you hold them the greater the chance of Contam. This is a good place to drop another tek tip: Make sure the jars and everything are crystal clean... Not that a bit of filth hurts the tek (because it is pc sterilized) but flecks of dirt in the clear liquid culture _look_ like contams... and you never seem to notice them until after the mycelium has started to take off... You will be swirling in front of a good light and all of the sudden there is a flake of verm or a small grain of rice flour that somehow got in there and then it seems to make all the difference, it's very noticeable... Always difficult to identify. You would be surprised at the dust and crap that gets in the jars at filling time if you are not clean... It does not hurt the tek, but motes of dust and stuff look like contams. In fact motes of cotton dust floating look very much like spores germinating at 24-36 hours. As long as the specks are not growing the culture is fine, but with an eye after a jar or two, you will see fine detail under good light. You can also add some small chunks of clean broken glass to the jar before sterilizing, shaking the jar with the glass in it fragments the mycelia nicely and speeds up the growth.. But it makes it harder to eyeball. Another good way to break up the mycelium is simply to draw in a syringe and squirt it back out into the liquid. This usually disperses the myc very well and helps to break up the larger clumps. As for volume. Use 200-250cc (a pint jar about halfway). You should shake every day for aeration and to prevent clumping and matting. When its done in about 12-14 days or so, at rest, the mycelium reaches about 3/4 of the way up from the bottom of the jar. This ensures that all 20-25 syringes have ample mycelium. Since the mycelium is actually cultured in the liquid, any syringe will grow out even if there are no visible mycelium clumps but, the clear syringes usually don't blast off the same way as the relatively cloudy ones. Also looking at the second pic of all the jars man i am not too sure that the right one was actually contamns of course it was not the greatest pic but, it looks like all your jars need better FAE. I am sure after you dunk that cake you will see a greater output in the mushies and if you do the MS LC, I KNOW you will have alot better success man. Also good luck on the 2nd flush. Also I would suggest putting you heatbomb type heater in the middle of all your jars this way they all get the radiant heat from it not just some of them, as this lack of uniform heating could very well be another factor in slow colonization. IF you notice in the pic most of your jars aside from 4 or 5 are farther away from the heating source and thier will diffently be a tempature varience. If you put that heating source in the center then they all will have the benfit of its radiant heat and not some geting more than others

![]() | he says thanks for the advice, it'll definitely be an LC next time. Yeah, besides the first one that pinned invitro, the rest accidentally got dunked for 48 hours due to him putting them in and then leaving town planning to be back sooner. Does the incubator lid get popped open for FAE or something with the jars?(bigger holes, less dry verm?) thanks everyone

![]() | ![]() the ones hanging and the ones off this cake weighed in at 11.5g dry. that makes the guy that did this horrific thing very happy, since it was from three cakes and he still has more flushes and cakes to be birthed.
