    Going Invitro, couple of questions

AFOAF decide they wanted to try some invitro jars using Hippie's supercake formula.

They got everything except blue cornmeal, bee pollen, and kelp meal. Where did y'all find those?

I think we may be able to get the bee pollen and blue cornmeal at the local hole in the wall healthfood store. I'll check tomorrow.

If we can find some kind of kelp extract there would that work? Say it's in pill form, just crush the pills(or open the capsules)?

We have some wide mouth pint jars we are using and I was wondering if we could use micropore tape instead of a 1/2" vermiculite layer?

Of course we would leave 1/4" or so open to prevent brf from sticking to the underside of the tape.

    All constructive comments are welcome!

Between Gardners- a health food store in the south, and an average nursery I find everything needed for the supermix. And basically all I need.

When in doubt just ask the owners, managers. There were tons of things that I ended up getting later because stoner-teen worker didn't know his sh*t.

Do not skimp on the verm layer. It is your contam barrier. It may work with tape, but you are gonna want to take off that tape after innoculation anyways and then you would have no barrier.

Innoculation is the beginning of a long process. If you skip steps now, you will find more problems later.

That's why most of the pro's around here are very methodical, scientific, about their approach.

And BTW is it because you can't find verm, or just don't want to use it. Because it is part of the supermix and neccessary.

I have a ton of it, 4 cubic feet bag. It will be a long time before I need more vermiculite

I have a bunch of lids with holes covered with medical tape and silicone injection sites I used for popcorn spawn in quart jars.

I would not take the tape off as I have had great success with it keeping contams out of my popcorn.

    Thanks for the help

My buddy made up 24 pint jars last night and cooked one round of 14 jars. No tape, just 1/2" of vermiculite layer

I told him to make a list and mark off each ingredient so he wouldn't forget any and what happens, he forgot the cottonseed meal.

Since he said he got the mixture a little dry (did not drip at all when squeezed hard) I will go today and empty the jars and add the meal/water to those 10.

We have about 36 jars so I thought "hell, fill 'em all up!".

I took Hippie's recipe for 12, 1/2 pints which is 6 pints, right? I need that 6 times over to get 36, so I multiplied the ingredients times 6.

24 cups vermiculite, 12 cups BRF, 12 cups water. 6 tbs of everything except yeast wich was 6 ts.

This let us make 24 pint jars, not packed down at all, instead of 36. If someone could enlighten us on as to how this became different, we would appreciate it.

your math seems solid, and let me tell you. I just did 36 half pints, and it was a lot of work.

Get a system, and make sure you have everything ready ahead of time.

FWIW, I did up hippie's supercake formula, but left out the blue cornmeal, cottonseed meal, and various kelp extracts. Oh, I couldn't find the nutritional yeast either.

I did manage to find bee pollen at the local health food store, and everything else at the supermarket.

    Hope your grow goes well!
