![]() | My Cakes are Dunking what next? Hi Gang, So I have a few cakes dunking, in their own jar with a wedge of foil between the cake and the lid. Once they're done soaking up water (24 hours, in the fridge) what do I do? That is should I add dry verm? wet verm? No verm? and just keep them in the jar?

![]() | Here's what I'd do - take it for what it's worth. It worked really well for me though. First, 24 hours ought to not kill them, but I think 20's pretty sufficient - less, even. Go to the pet store, buy a brick of coir, and weigh it. Weigh out an equal amount of dry, fine vermiculite. Take pretty hot water, dump the coir in the hot water. Let it soak for about 5 minutes, then start breaking it up with your hands. It should be fairly easy. There should be plenty of water for the little chunks to float around in, which have already absorbed a good amount of water. Get the coir finely shredded - no lumps. There should still be water. Dump your vermiculite into this and mix thoroughly. Now obtain FIELD CAPACITY by adding water until you can take a handful of this mix and squeeze literally 1 or 2 drops of water out. They shouldn't even roll off your finger, just pool on the side. If you add too much water, don't worry. You can even it out with a little extra vermiculite. But don't go adding WAY too much water, then WAY too much vermiculite, back and forth. That will mess up your ratio of coir to verm badly. After this mix is finished, load it into a large jar, or mycobag if you have one, and PC at 15 PSI for 40 minutes. Some people use the microwave here. I prefer not to use the microwave for anything involving mushrooms except for melting chocolate. Anyway, tada! This ought to work. Like I said - it worked well for me. Here's a pic of my FC. I think a good bit of my success has been due to the DEC method I used. Oh yeah, forgot to mention, this casing mix does go above and below the cake. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Dizz, there is plenty of info here at topia regarding dunking, rolling and care of cakes. ![]() Juan, you could either roll your cakes in the verm or use a DEC. you just want the verm damp. Remember you just re hydrated the cakes, you don't want them to become water logged. It will probably take a few days for the cakes to recover so don't worry. ![]()
