peat moss will work, just keep it clean as competitive molds can grow on it.

If you use peat, balance the pH with gypsum or whatever. Find a reliable tek and follow it.

Can't just go buy some verm?

U can use peat but you're going to need some lime to bring the ph down.I've had success with golly's lawn grass thread but I had verm mixed in with it

hey thanks guys for the quick respones. i have plenty of coir but i thought that coir was no longer a good casing material because it has to many nutes and the myc will colonize it. should i be using lime or gypsum- perlite is just a NO right? dont use peat and perlight?

Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting soil is a great casing layer I hear.

Coir is used all the time as a casing with great results. If you have it I would use it. It just needs to be misted more than verm since it dries out quicker.

I'm a BIG fan of Sta-Green brand Cactus potting soil. It's a healthy combo of peat moss, lime and organic compost. Mushrooms burst right up through it. But with any casing layer that has nutrients, either the cactus mix or the miracle grow, contams may find it as a home. And from personal experience, casing a fully colonized substrate and then having mold colonies surface on top just plain sucks. I learned quick. Just be sure that you pasteurize it or put it in a jar and PC it, and otherwise keep it clean afterwards.

Oh and "late casing" is fine. A lot of people wait until pins form before casing.

what does "keeping it clean afterwards" exactly entail? Picking out spots where you can already see mold forming? Or...

pancyan i know you've seen my mycobags and monotubs, i never ever use a casing layer!!!

so of course im going to say, it's not absolutely neccesary and you'll still get a good flush or 4.

Sorry, what I mean by "keeping it clean" is, if you're using a FC, to spray it down with lysol or whatever before using it, wiping it down, not introducing anything that may have contams in it, etc, basically keeping everything its around as clean as possible.

Found some Miracle Grow: Organic Grow today. Peat, compost and pastuerized chicken poo! Total N only .1% so it's not hot at all. Looks like a promising supplement with straw and casing mix.
