lw420 guide to help with your fungi grows!!!

this guide is gonna be a run down of other people work that i pass around a lot to help others in their fungi grows. a lot of this information is spread wide in this forum so i figured i'll compile the great information in one thread to help the new member and some of the old members of this community after all we are family here at topia. if you find something that i might have missed please share provide a link and give and idea of what the link is for.
ok to start this off a lot of people are nervous to work in open air i know when i 1st started this hobby i was all about the gloves, alcohol, and flame sterilization. so i think the 1st thing that i'll post is a few great methods of making a glove box all though they are hell to work in, but if your enviorment that your working in isn't the cleanest then you should definately have one of these around the house.

    glove boxes/shmvbox/flowhood

    glove box
Wikid and Lime build a glovebox
    ghetto bag glovebox
PsychoTek Glovebox - less mess, 24 bucks.

eatyualive shared this one with me:

    shmuvbox
    Quote:

behold the shmuvbox. best invention of the century! credit to molester. its very portable and you can get a larger liner that will allow more work space. right now you can see 20 quart jars WBS and two BRF jars in this pic. if you zoom in you can see the two hand holes and the eye hole. the more transparent the bag the better. you won't need the eye hole if the bag is transparent.
this is such a great invention. i sold my flowhood . i have poured plates, taken clones, made spore syringes, g2g transfers, you name it, it has been done in this thing. portable, effective, cheap! can't go wrong!
i use a shmuvbox. it is a HEPA with a big clear trash bag over it, you place all your clean tools, fruits for cloning , and benzo torch to sterilize your blades in this bag.
usually i will wipe down every single part of this HEPA with 70-90% rubbing alc. be anal, spray it with disinfectant spray. this thing will pour plates and take clones easily. holmes brand HEPA filters with a small Ionizer built in are a great size. you only need a small room size filter. and it should be around 30$ at walmart.
once you put the bag around the filter, tape it down to the table your working on. this will in turn, allow the bag to stay put.
now blow your bag up that has all your cooled utensils and sterile equipment in it.
turn on the HEPA and when it blows up, cut two holes in it for your hands. one for each. and if you can't find 100% clear lawn bags for the bag, you can cut eye holes as well. this produces positive air pressure and forces out the bad stuff. its real simple, clones can be taken and it stores nicely. its efficient and takes up little space, and hides easily.
i been using this method ever since eatyualive has shown me this shmuvbox and man am i glad he did i was on the way to building a flowhood.

you can probably go a little less once you get the hang of how much the dry kernels will absorb. on average the kernel will expand 3 times it's size.
Now PC at 15 psi for 1 hour. after an hour, turn off the PC and left the pressure adjust back to zero... once the safety nob drops, you can unscrew the lid. be very careful.. the PC will still be very hot. don't let the steam get ya in the face.
Now pour the corn into a strainer. I rinse off the corn with hot water first. the kernels will have lots of starch on them.. if you rinse with cold water first the starch will coegulate making it a bitch to get off. rinsing is a very important part of the process... you want to get the kernels as free from starch as possible. once you've rinsed with hot water... rinse with cold. this will cool the kernels down making them easier to handle and also 'tighten' the kernel up making it not so mooshy.
once rinsed, i let the corn sit for a few minutes to drain. Next i lay down a piece of paper towel and lay the corn on top of that in a single kernel layer. then i place another piece of paper towel on top of the corn layer and roll my hands lightly over the corn. If you don't want to hydrate a whole Pressure Cooker full of corn, you can just put a couple inches of kernels in the bottom of a quart jar.. then fill the qt jar with water about an inch from the top and PC that (with water in the bottom of the PC of course) for an hour at 15 psi.

This problem can be overcome by spawning heavily after Pasteurization ,so the mycelia consume these undigested materials b4 the bacteria has a chance to multiply to the point where it dominates..This problem is not an issue with well aged poo but when mixed with straw or other undigested material - it can begin composting if the myc is too slow to colo...

The second common problem is poor drainage or oversaturation which cause anaerobic bacteria to get a foothold ..Generally smells like old socks..
In this case you can flip the sub out of the tray and expose to good ventilation ,to dry it down and oxygenate..The smell should subside and maybe able to save the grow..

The third problemo , is bagged manure with urine in the mix ..It will generate ammonia
    and the Mycelium won't fruit..
So it's often a good idea to leach and sun dry any such bags because once spawned ,there is no good fix..

When picking your manure, try and find the really dry old stuff. That is best to use. If you use fresh manure there are steps you'll need to take before you can use it.
