Is fruiting possible on wheat berries alone?

So far I worked mostly with wheat berries, and noticed that they don't fruit not even invitro if left in a lit place with invitro pinning coir cakes neighbouring them.

No pins on a tray, without a casing layer, some fruits with a casing, and good flushes with mixed in substrates (not bulk subs, I don't go below 30%spawn-70%bulk ratio)

Water content is on the lower side 50-60% but is that the only cause?

pure grain just doesn't hold enough water by itself to fruit well

Depends on how you define 'well', I suppose.
Multispore LC to WBS, cased with MGMC.
Four and a half flushes from that tub.

Granted, spawning to a bulk sub like poo or coir is going to give bigger, prettier flushes. But in terms of space, time and money involved, fruiting from grains is a viable option.

Hippie was answering the question of "wheat berries alone". Meaning no casing.

Oh, yeah. Need a casing layer.
OP had mentioned it, I figured it was assumed.
And I've never tried *wheat* berries, though rye worked ok for me. Cased, of course.

Edit- I've had minor success with pure WBS, fruited cake-style, just popped out of the jars and put into an FC. Nothing to brag about, but a enough fruits for spores.

i had some pinage in a jar of wbs once. I picked off what i could see and used the rest as spawn.

bingo.
it'll pin, but it'd do better cased or spawned to bulk or both
