![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Random questions about bulk, coir, verm
Arite in the process of incubating some cakes that are going to be spawned to a bulk substrate. what i got is a hpoo/straw,verm mix(45,45,10) mushroom substrate. Usually i just spawn too that but im thinking the bulk subs arent holding as much moisture as it should. Would you recomend adding vermiculate to the mix to allow it to retain more water. Can I add verm at the spawning stage? if so what sterilization procedures must I follow? Instead of using vermiculate could i use coir instaed? It definately can hold a lot of moisture and can add some nutrients to it as well I believe. same question how do i prep it to spawn to it? What do you guys recomend? i guess Im trying to add some water retaining abilities and add a lil bit of cheap depth to my bulk substrates? Also, ive used a verm/coir mix for casings, which i like, but ive had a problem with the subs contaming earlier on the verm/coir than uncased. Say on the second flush instead of the third or fourth. anyone else have similar problems with coir? Perhaps because the casing doesnt fully colonize it allows contams to grow a bit then get ahold of the mycelium.

I like to call that my "cut" The coir or verm will add more to your bulk sub mix and aid in moisture retention. You can add these when you pasteurize your bulk materials. Just mix in your amount of coir or verm with your bulk materials and pasteurize away. |

Ha the cut , by coincidence I have to repasteurize the bulk sub anyway! Now it does take me a while to go thru the bulk and i plan on using some now and some a month from now. will it resist contamination in storage as well as the hpoo which has no problems with contams in storage.
