How sterile does the fruiting chamber have to be? I've made a poor man's FC out of a big cardboard box lined with plastic. I put some polyfil holes around it and made a clear lid. Does that seem alright?

i have used spray bottles and used the diluted bleach one to spray the sides of the container to help the RH and also that kinda helps keeps clean and i have read a post on here for a safe bleach to water ratio to use on myc to help keep clean but i would just spray bleach water or alcohol everywhere all the time ....adds the moisture that needs to be in there....and i have poured a heavy duty bleach water into my perlite a cake tipped over into it and still fruited cause the sterilty idk but i just pulled it out and it seemed hydrated after fruited nice.....with thick stems

Proly would work for a while When I first started,I bought a few shroom books, and went from there. Your FC can be a simple as a large clear bag with holes cut out and put over your container. the casing will keep the RH high enough. with misting that is. just use your imagination(like you did lol) Just check for change in your couch and your buddies couches lol eventually you will have enough for a real FC. have fun,Peace

Sounds good to me... post some updates when you are about to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Regarding bleach, the word is overuse can cause mutant shrooms. Cleaning out an FC between uses with it would be fine, if you made sure to rinse it all out, but I wouldn't use a bunch of it while fruiting. Anyway, IMO the FC doesn't have to be super sterile if you have healthy cakes anyway. Strong mycelium will fend off contams, and everything else in your FC should be non-nutrative, so shouldn't grow them. Make sure you handle the cakes with clean hands and clean the cakes of aborts or pieces of stem when you pick them, as these can sometimes go rotten. In my experience, its when the cakes start looking a little worn out that they get contaminated, so I either chuck em after a couple flushes or move them to individual FCs, like big yogurt containers or tupperware, etc.
