I clip the end off and dry them...the coir/verm is easier to clean off when dry imo. I save all the stumps up till I have enough to make it worthwhile to make an extraction elixir.

I use a dull knife to lightly scrape the vermiculite off, comes off rather easy, and there nice and clean.

Fresh or dry, a sharp razor knife (boxcutter) cuts off that ol shit with minimal loss of stump flesh. Like whittling at times. With a pack of replacement blades one always has a sharp cutter. Thats how granpappy cleaned his shrooms.

1/8th to 1/4 inch thumbnail on your dominant hand. Let it dry first and then just scrape it with your fingernail. If it won't come off with that just use the fingernail to clip it off. Save or discard at your discretion. No big deal. |

I've stopped worrying about cleaning them off. I used to always worry about it, but sitting and cleaning a few ounces is a pain in the ass so I'd just cut the base off after the were dry and used a toothbrush to brush away any stuck anywhere else. Now, I don't really worry about it. We hadn't been using verm in a while but just started back up because it helps so much with humidity. I think we'll just leave them dirty and make tea out of them and filter it. If they are for a friend that prefers to eat them raw, I suppose we will clean them up a little bit. Or let them worry about it. |

it's very easy to clean a lot of fruits at once and get them pretty close to completely clean. Lets say you have two oz's to clean. Dry them first, then put them all into a large ziplock and close the bag. Then you simply tug and pull at the bag and tumble it around. The fruits themselves act as each others abrasive and clean themselves. After a min or two, you lightly shake the bag and the casing material etc. will fall to the bottom of the bag and you can pull out your clean fruits. Think rock tumbler.

I cut off the stipe butt and, dry to brush off the remaining. I'll repeat scraping when dry as, agreeably, it is much easier. If there's still a little bit left, as invariable some is just permanently stuck in it, I don't worry about it and send 'em down the hatch.
