Im getting a green contaminate on 4 out of five bins that i make. It is getting very frusterating. it starts as a dense white spot then turns green. any ideas? only thing i could come up with was they are to wet so i have been keeping the bins as dry as possible and actually wicking the excess water up with paper towel. but its not working. every bin gets the same green mold. please help!

Firstly let me say welcome to mycotopia community ! Glad you made it. This is a great meeting place. The archives and vaults are filled with amazing information. The green is trichoderma . Its the bane of mushroom growers worldwide. We've pretty much all had it and if we have'nt we likely will. Its very common. There are ways of avoiding trich outbreaks and they are written about in the archives. The best thing you can do is clean your grow/work area as best as you can and regularily. The next thing that is done is pasturization of you materials in a 160 F water bath for at least 2 hours (or more) or out right sterilization at 15 psi for 60 mins (or more) in a pressure cooker. Trich definitely likes constant high humidity and so yes having a wet sub/casing can make you susceptible. Also poor FAE , fresh air exchange can be a contributing factor , so its good to have lots and lots of holes in your tub (and lid). These holes are filled with either Polyfil or Tyvek . One other thing I noticed was you mentioning that you were using paper towel and mopping up excess water. As you have a trich infestation it makes such that when you open the tub and squeeze the substrate and actually touch it etc. you are inadvertently spreading the trich. It has phases and when its in its green one it is sporelating. This means its sending out millions (billions ?) of spores. Trich spores are sticky and adhere to anything they can (like you) and spread like wildfire. Once you get trich its best to pitch that project outside because it will spread to all your non-contamned projects. You can try and make some outdoor beds of your contamed projects if you really feel like trying to recover something. The tubs should now be cleaned very well with hot water , a good soaping and even a touch of bleach water. Good luck with your projects. You'll find many threads here at mycotopia about the green trich .So don't feel like your alone. Cheers

I know it's not proven but.... Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight! Open dem windows up and let the light shine in! It really seems to help kill the trich. That's the only thing I can add to the master answer by hyph. Oh and of course: WELCOME HERE! Enjoy your stay, good peeps, teaching how to grow good eats!

We could propabley be more helpful if you are more specific. Is it on your casing or substrate? Was your substrate fully colonized before you cased if you cased? The excess moisture can cause alot of problems especially bacteria. The green contams spread rapidly and need to be nipped in the bud if not too far gone. Have you had success at growing at other times? Welcome to Mycotopia BTW, MW

![]() | Green on my casing
i had a large tub 6qt/12qt grain to straw. It was fully colonised. looked great! cased it with coco and verm. the entire surface of the casing was white. all of a sudden i got an intensely white spot and then the next day it was a big green spot. this is the bin i used. i had perlite on the bottom with a splash of bleach. i always do it this way but i seem to have problems when i make the larger bins |

are you using straight straw? not hay, timothy hay, alf-alfa any shit like that right? A large amount of those contain trich. Also are you putting trays in these tubs on top of perlite? You shouldn't need perlite for casings. Click on monotub, casings only need 80-90% humidity, any more and your asking for contams, and what temps are you incubating at? Also make sure that your tubs aren't dripping on top of the sub. Best 'o luck!
