![]() | question about liquid culture
hello all,im a total noob to shroom cultivation and am halfway thru my first grow.appart from loosing a couple of jars to white fuzzy stuff, everything else is going well. ive got a wee quiestion here,i hope it doesnt seem to dum. a couple of weeks ago i made a simple liquid culture in a jar with sterilized water and honey, now this jar has one hole in the lid where the spores where injected in to,and is covered with foil. i left the jar in a dark cupboard for about 9 days untill their looked like a good amount of mycelium in it,and then put the jar in to the fridge where its been for about four or five days. now i dont expect it to last for to long(being sutch a noobieish tech i used),and for all i know is allready contaminated,so i dont really wany to test it out on a bunch of jars only to find a few weeks down the line it was a falure and ive wasted all the substrate on it. i was thinking of inoculating one small jar to test it but i dont know if i want to wait in hope of the one jar colonizing and while im waiting the liquid culture gets contaminated,or dies of suffocation or something. so im thinking of either throwing it in the bin and attempting a more profesional culture or trying this, now bare with me and let me know if you think it could work. what if i where to sterilize 4 or 5 jars of brown rice flour and vermeculite mix but by putting 100ml less water in to the mix than whats needed, then using a glove box i transfer the sterized substrate to a sterilized ziplock bag,and then add 100ml of the liquid culture, mix together with the substrate and put away to colonize.i could then later add it to a tray and case. is this just a head in the clouds idea or could it work. i dont want to waist the culture.i was hoping because of the amount of lc i would be adding to the substrate would make it colonize really quick.and the reason i would have to use brown rice flour and verm is because i dont have a pressure cooker. failing this i could always take it up to the cow feilds and pour all over the cow dung, lol, but then i dont think it would grow here in scotland. sorry for the noob attitude and questions but weve all got to start somwhere. |

Welcome to the topia! ![]() 1. Go to the vaults and read up on BRF. here is a link : http://forums.mycotopia.net/cakes-brf-aka-pf-tek/ follow the basic brf tek first. 2. Did you silicone the injection port on the LC? 3. If your only covering it in foil with an open hole then unfortunately your screwed. It has 99% likely already contamed on you. 4. And I can't stress this one enough, go to the vaults and read EVERYTHING you can stand to. I haunted this site for almost 1 1/2 years before I made a first post. Read, read, read.

mycowarrior,i was gonna put it in the bag because their would have been a lot of it and would colonize quicker in the bag,as i could keep breaking it up(like if i was using grains),plus i need the jars (which are almoast impossible to find here). mestophilies, thanks for the welcome, and yes i will have to do more reading(its just finding the time at the moment).no i didnt silicone the whole up,it was just a quick decision at the time when i made it,i done the whole thing under sterile conditions with sterile equipment, but i kind of guessed it wouldn't be safe with only foil covering the lid. i will just chuck it in the bin in case it contaminates anything.ive followed an rr video tech for my grow which is all gowing fine at the moment but i think im gonna have to try and find a pressure cooker,i dont want to have to keep making syringes all the time if im gonna get in to this hobby seriously, ive been reading about grain to grain and casing and i think that must be the way forward. cheers. |
