![]() | My Grain Jars.
This is the way I've been doing my grain jars and I've been having about an 80% success rate. First I pour my grain into a large pot(Penningtons finch food), and cover with about 2 or 3 inches of water. I bring it to a hard boil, Then cover and remove from heat. I let it sit for an hour or so then rinse repeatedly in cold water. I put 2 cups of grain in each jar and use 2 coffee filters, and tin foil. I PC for 75 minutes. When I take the jars out I shake them to loosen up the grains. After the jars cool I inject 5cc's of hydrogen peroxide into each jar and shake again, I let them sit for an hour then inoculate with 2cc's of spore solution. It takes about 5 to7 days for an signs of growth. Any comments on how I can improve on this or something that maybe I should do different.

Use tyvek instead of coffee filters. Also, I think you can omit the 5cc's peroxide since pc'ing the grain itself should be sufficient. As for the moisture content, if what you do works, stick with it. I myself just simmer 30-40 minutes, rinse well and load jars.

No need for the h2o2. Sterilizing at 15 psi for 75 minutes should kill any nasties. Tyvek is probably better to use too, like laborer said. I'd use maybe 4 layers though to keep the grain from drying out. And 5-7 days isn't bad for germination. I have had to wait almost 2 weeks to see germination from multi-spore inoculations. Some are fast some are slower. Liquid Cultures tend to speed it up a little. If it is working for you , don't change anything. If you are looking for faster jar growth, incubation can speed it up by a few days. Usually it just takes as long as its gonna take.
