everyone does it a little different. i think the most common way is having a couple at or just above the substrate level, and maybe a couple up higher near the lid.

Yep, I agree boss, slightly above the sub to give Co2 a release point, then higher up to allow fresh air to be drawn in. CO2 being a heavier gas, sinks to sub level and this causes a kind of venturi effect. Pulling in fresh air.

with in 1 -2 in. of the sub you should be fine. the closer the better i would have to say.
