![]() | old rye grain jar still good?
I have a fully colonized rye grain jar that has been sitting in my incubator for about 2 months. It has some excess water in the jar that the mycelium pushed out to the edge of the jar once fully colonized. This water has now turned to mycelium piss. I am just wondering if this jar is still good to use. It doesn't seem to have any contaminants other than the wetspot on the bottom caused by the piss, and the piss itself. Can anybody help me here.

i cant say if its still good or not. someone will chime in soon tho. but i can tell you that if you dont plan on using your spawn for a while, you should throw it in the fridge

Give it a try into something small. If you don't see any nasties and don't smell any funky smells then you might be golden. Keeping it small insures that if it does not take off you haven't lost too much time and effort. GLUK!

After grain fully colonizes and I cant use it at the time I put in a fridge that is dedicated to myco work and leave it there untill use. I have had colonized rye sit in the fridge for months and its still good. As for sitting the incubator I couldnt tell you. Give it a shot.

I've heard anecdotally that spawn this old is more potent. It was observed that using old and mature spawn created fruits that were reported to be almost twice as potent when compared to fresh spawn. The theory was that more nutrients were processed by the mycelium which in turn allowed more actives to be created later on. I'm not sure if I believe this one myself, I'd rather use the freshest spawn I could get, but if you do make this work please report back with your bioassay. |
