![]() | does location of pin growth on cake tell us anything about habitat?
This is something that kinda relates to a post about casing and pin growth on them, but i am dealing with cakes. I have my first cake starting to show some pins (!) and i see that the two that have appeared are along the bottom of the cake, where i assume the moisture/humidity is the highest. Is that a coincidence, or not? Does it mean i need to mist cake more often? I have been misting only once a day, since i am using a kit that is supposed to take care of moisture levels. I knew that wasn't going to be entirely the case, so i decided to mist the one time a dy. I have been doing it twice a day the last two days. That is when the pins have first appeared, though it's been 8 days so could be coinicidence. Also, the two pins are growing on the opposite side of the window where the cake is geting it's indirect light. Does this mean anything, or is it insignificant since mushroms aren't photosynthetic (?) entities? So, to summarize, should i mist more since pins are appearing at teh bottom of cake and should i decrease light since pins appearing on darker side of cake? Thanks, again. |

The thing that I'd do is dunk your cakes for 24 hrs, then birth them onto a bed of perlite no more than an inch an 1/2 thick, wet perlite that is,and watch the majic happen.

Pins growing on the bottom or top edge of a cake are common. No prob. ![]() As for mushies and light, Ps. Cubensis needs a very small amount of light to trigger pinning, and they will grow toward light sources, but light in general is nothing to fret too much about. edit: don't put them in direct sunlight! |

pinning common on bottom, that's where most of the water is [gravity pulls it to lowest point] misting won't change that. but really observation of pin location on a few cakes is not enough data to merit any conclusions in respect to lighting.

Cubensis also often fruits in clusters. A nice big cluster of mushrooms all springing from the same base is very desirable since it makes harvesting so much easier and seems to produce a higher yield when grown out as an isolate.
