Gentamiacin (sp?) is what is generally used. Is it not heat sensitive therefor it can be autoclaved.

Remember, unless your primary problem with cultures is a bacterial infection (not something typically easy to determine), adding an antibiotic to your agar won't do much good. Antibiotics won't do anything for trich or other competing contaminants. I've used Malt Yeast Agar w/ antibiotic for about a year now- still get the mean green, or black... now and then.

But if someone could ever manage to create a selective fungicide, basically taking out anything beyond the higher Basidiomycetes, well... that would be the Holy Grail of mycology. Maybe, hopefully, some day...

If one could program a microscope to scan agar for foreign beings, other than your spores or mycelium, and zap them out of existence with a laser. That would be the way to go..Or am I in the Twilight Zone?
