![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | blue mold, will myc overcome it?
hey guys, i have a rice cake with about 3 quarters of mycelium fully colonized but the thing is, the rest of the cake is turning into blueish mold/contam.. the myc seems to be still growing and i was wondering what to do with this.. i don't really want to throw the cake out since its my last one.. i still have prints but if theres a way i could save this one it would be amazing.. i'll upload pics later tonight, i just got home from a 12 hour night shift and its bed time for me now! thanks in advance for any answers

Hey Lebrony, I can't say w/out seeing pics, but if your "mold" has no greenish tinge to it you might be OK. Check out this thread: http://forums.mycotopia.net/fungi-gr...-bruising.html (is this mold or bruising) Hope it proves useful...and good luck!

If it's definitely mold - I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but IME, considering the rather high risk of failure, it's easy to spend too much time on trying to salvage half dead cakes. If I have enough spores I will much rather start over again. Making new cakes is a great joy IMO. But good luck whatever you choose to do! :-)

ok thanks for the answers.. no it's not bruising.. it does have a greenish tint to it.. as promised here are the pics but what i think i will do is cut the part of the cake which has contams on it off and start fruiting the other part as i once did before..

that is most diffently one of the strains of trich, don't open those jars in your house if you are gonna try and cut that away, do it outside and sterilize everything with bleach or iso before bringing it back into the house.

The reason you don't open jars with molds in them is because they have air born spores, did you notice a nice dusty kinda layer come off it when you cut the trich out. That powdery dust is all trich spores bro, so I am willing to bet you will see alot more of that mold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichoderma

The healthy mycelium may prevent trich from germinating on it, but, I doubt the casing would be so lucky, if you used a straight verm casing but, peat moss and trich seem to get along, so if that casing material was applied or opened after pasterization in the area that the trich was opened in I doubt it will make it long, but, who knows man, mycelium is some resiliant shit sometimes and it wins, lets hope this is the case here.

ok just a little update... no shrooms yet and no pins but the moldy smell is almost all gone and it smells like mycelium again also the pete moss on the bottom has rhizomorphic myc growing all over it.. i had no idea mycelium could grow on pete moss.. so what i did is i added a jar of colonized popcorn over the original casing and ovet that another layer of verm.. i hope this will turn out well

![]() | Trich IN JAR
SWIM injected a little nute solution in a set of cakes that took too long and dried out, prolly should have used plain water, but said what the hell. Actually worked very well, but one jar got the trich, SWIM injected a bleach solution in contamned jar before opening, that kept the trich from getting all over, and was able to save the colonized part of the cake. This trich outbreak was on the outside of the cake, don't really think there would be much worth saving if it was inside. |

for the future...if someone says a word you do not understand, and it comes up yellow. You can click on it and than you will know exactly what they are talking about. Some cases a word means multiple things...but that a chance you must take. Green mold sucks (aka trich) and i have a tub that was spent i have to clean out. well old greenie moved in so i locked the lid town til im ready to murder the fungus outside away from my projects. Those spores go airborn quick so you must be careful not to disturb them or else they will fly around and cling to anything and eventually make way into your projects.

yea i seen that. thats awesome. Ive had it happen...but as of now i get so much projects going...it isnt worth my time saving a contamed jar...i just toss it. i guess if sum1 only has few projects its worth the extra effort. Good Job!

For the next try place a little bit perlite on the bottom of the tray as a draining layer (vermiculite will work too), but a draining layer isn't necessary at all. what growing in your draining layer is healthy rhyzomorphic mycelium, no pins, no primordia, notning, but mycelium. I'd not expose bottom and sides of the tray to light, or you'll get pins, where you can not harvest. But if you keep things clean, not-harvested pins won't rot, but reintegrate as mycelium. Better be safe then sorry, use some tinfoil, or dark plastic sheet to cut off the light from the bottom and sides of the tray.
