outdoors your conditions have to be just right for mushies to pop up in the garden. outdoors you have no control , inside you can control your climate much better instead of waiting on mother nature to run it's coarse. your conditions to grow will depend on the strain you are trying to fruit. if you live in england you would want to chose a strain that works well within that climate .
i've tossed spent projects in my compost pile and dumped it in the garden. mushies will pop up when the conditions are right with no prob. when doing this it's a crap shoot and i don't have much expectation for anything to pop out.
if you're wanting to do outdoor grows try looking into wood lovers those seem to do very well outside in wood chip patches. i've never experimented with wood lovers so i can't offer much on the subject, check out the vaults , that should get you going in the right direction.
