That's a PF Tek cake. For the LC I boiled some dried brewer's yeast in a small amount of water and filtered through a coffee filter. I added that to the water for the culture. I used some Pislner dry malt extract I had lying around. I think it was about a 4% solution. I also used a stir bar on a stir plate. The stir bar and plate did wonders for the mycelium. There was almost no clumping. It was so fluffly that I probably wouldn'thave recognized it if I didn't know better. Made it so easy to suck up in a syringe. The boiled yeast is a cross over from homebrewing. I don't know if it actually does anything, but it is helpful in brewing. DME (dry malt extract) doesn't have as many nutrients as the actual grain so it's good practice to add yeast nutrients. Dead yeast cells are a pretty good source. |

If you are going to use DME I would recommend using some kind of Pislner extract. Everything says you want to use light, but Pislner is lighter than light DME. Want it as clear as possible, with as little non-useful things as possible. At least to me, DME makes more sense than honey or karo or anything else like that. The others provide only sugar. DME provides other nutrients as well. |

Great job man! I'm getting ready to knock up some more jars here in a few after cleaning the bathroom and taking a shower with my LC....going to knock up using my lc, not take a shower with my lc! haha. Congrats man, it looks great and i'm sending you some good vibes (ohhhmmmmm.....ohhhmmmm) for a successful grow!

Pulled the LC out of the fridge just for you guys ![]() I took some pictures fresh out of the fridge. You can kind of see how fluffy it is in the first two pictures. The third picture I tried to get it as it first started on the stir plate. The last picture is to show how cloudy it is with the stir plate going. I also wanted to make a point of saying these are all quart jars. I know a lot of people use 1/2 pint or pint jars. I think that also shows a testament to LC in how fast the PF cake is colonizing. |

are your jars completely full? I like to keep mine at about half full so I can swish it around and leaves room for more air. The one jar I have is getting low so I'm waiting on my karo solution to cool down so I can shoot up another jar.

The yeast used in homebrewing are fungi, they just don't form fruit. That's why I think a lot of homebrewing things would apply here. What's good for the goose must be good for the gander. Also, look into aseptic technique. You can get a pretty good idea of what to do from that. Find a good microbiology book that has that in it. I learned my aseptic technique in a microbiology lab. Now I feel lost without the hood though Look into USP 797 as well. It's the standard pharmacies have to follow for their IV hoods.Check out http://www.howtobrew.com A lot of the yeast stuff will apply to this as well. Cliff notes: Don't count yourself out. You'd be amazed what you can learn from books. | |

My ones I'm preparing now for the prizes from the BNL are only partially full. More full than most, but not as full. I have a lid with air ports and a stir bar. With that I don't think there is any concern about air. The stirring pulls more air in than it needs. Just make sure the holes are covered. Remember Pasteur, germs can't fall upwards. Another tip from homebrewing. Yeast starters made with a stir bar grow about a million times faster than the ones without a stir bar. I'm curious to see if they behave any differently. If they don't I'm going to keep filling them all the way up. I figure the more that is in there, the more nutrients for the mycelium. And since it is DME it is actually more nutrients and not just more fermentables. I'll be sure to report back on if there are any differences. Last edited by essentrik1; 07-12-09 at 14:14.
