Recent Cake Action

Just thought I'd include a few snaps of some BRF PF cakes that I saw a family of elves put together recently.

These are mostly Ecuadorian strain, DEC'd and rolled.

Spores by Hillbilly and The Good Spore…with additional help by Hippie3.

Some of the cakes were on the very wet side, so complete colonization was not possible in some areas.

When these elves have colonizing cakes that are so wet that they don't 100% colonize the outside, the elves delicately scrape and remove the oversaturated/uncolonized material with a sterile fork or scalpel at birth.

They then wash off, dunk (12 hours), wash off, roll, and finally DEC the cakes....then place the cased cakes in a shotgun-style terrarium with perlite....and it always seems to fruit normally.

In fact, I think in some way the cakes with abnormal ridges and breaks in their normal contour pin and fruit more abundantly...just an observation.

Anyway, here we go. Comments welcomed...and I definitely need a mo betta camera SOON...thanks for checkin 'em out.

thanks trips. yeah the camera sometimes has troubles processing certain hues. A new camera is definetely on the wish list though.

Just normal ambient lighting used.

The elves have 4 sterilite 90-quart bulk tubs colonizing (hopefully) right now...can't wait to see what comes from them. 7 quarts of Ecuadorian WBS spawn layered between Hpoo/coir/verm at about 4:1:1 ratio.

I love how pretty EQ's turn out. Those look like some healthy cakes. How much of the cakes that didn't fully colonize did you have to scrape off (IE just the bottoms of the jars etc)? It seems like you still got some pretty good fruits considering you weren't able to keep the whole cake. Did you dunk first?

Hey Gadget, thanks for the kind words. Yeah, these elves have been making their cakes rather wet-like lately.

They do dunk their cakes, 12 hours usually.

They told me approx 30% of their cakes are sometimes left uncolonized due to over wet substrate that didn't colonize.

It seems when they birth the cakes and break them up (for other projects), they're still very goopy in the middle.

They've used the 1/2 cup verm, 1/4 brf & water mix when making the cakes, and they've been making them one at a time to better control variables.

They still have overly wet cakes, which means they're gonna try a 3/4 verm, 1/4 brf/water instead and see what that gets them. (they PC jars for 60 mins at 15 psi)

Usually the middles and near the bottom (top when birthed) of the cake don't colonize.

These elves could really make some cakes in the past...better than anything those Keebler hacks could put out....haha.

when swim makes cakes, he doesnt measure the water, but rather adds it in small amounts until the verm cant absorb any more then drains it off a little and add flour to the mix. that seems to make it the right moisture content and its really fluffy, which the myc seem to love..

hey thanks trips...that's an interesting idea. I'm mystified as to why the original PF recipe is giving these elves so much trouble.

Fast spreading mycelium is what the goal is, and I know my elven friends appreciate suggestions.

Bomb advice. The point is to get the verm as wet as you can with the proper mix, then slowly mix the BRF in to coat the wet verm. I usually do 1cup BRF, 2 cups verm, 1cup water. After the verm is nice and wet there will usually be water left in the bowl so I dump 1/2 cup brf in and mix the living shit out of it. After that I will dump the other half in and continue to mix the living shit out of it and keep it as light and fluffy as possible. This is all I know lol

yes fluffy substrates, with copious field capacity, are where the elves will be livin on their next BRF round.

they've crumbled ten newer cakes into small Tupperware containers and cased with coir/verm 1:1.

Thanks the both of ya; the elves are appreciative.

my foaf follows the 1/2/1 brf/verm/water then adds a little flax seed flour til the substrate is a little drier

Does that speed things up a little bit or just get it a little less moist?

Is it possible that extra moisture is getting into the jars when you PC or steam? I have had that happen. Good luck!

good info pizark; thanks for sharing your recipe.

It's possible some moisture could be getting into the PC, MLBjammer.

The elves will use more aluminum foil for sure, and carefully monitor how much water they'll use as they PC...their PC works a little too well...which is cool actually.

Thanks for the posts.

For PF jars all you need is Johnson and Johnson waterproof medical tape. Don't buy the cheap stuff, which melts. I just tape the four holes and don't use foil at all: it works like a charm. I hope that helps.

very cool, thanks MJBjammer.

They've just started using micropore surgical tape on jars, and the jars do seem to aerate better.

Nice adaptation of a technology.

Local super stores have been out of the usually recommended micropore tape brands, as the elves pilgrimage through the world in search of value-laden mycology supplies.

They were pleasantly surprised to find just two boxes recently, and they were pleased.

they're on the lookout for waterproof micropore tape, which would definitely eliminate rogue-water having an impact on the cakes fruiting life.

still enjoy watching cakes repeatedly fruit....cakes love that moisture.
thanks for the replys.

Just to clarify, the tape I am talking about is not breathable. It's just for PCing--about $3 a roll in most stores. The micropore tape is awesome for fruiting, though.
