![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Rye grass substitute ?
I have been doing some reading on cultivating philosopher's stones,I read that the normal PF tek can be used but I also read that when growing philosopher's stones that the ingredients used must all be edible so I can't use vermiculite. 100% BRF will turn to sludge and become compact so I was going to use Rye grass seeds but I can't find them anywhere. The only grass seeds I can find is Festuca rubra with rye grass already pre-mixed in with it. Can I use Festuca rubra instead of rye grass or a mix of the two ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festuca_rubra http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/invt/6477640 |

The Vitamin Cottage exists in a number of places, not sure if it's around where you live..... I would think any organic food market would have it where you live or hopefully relatively close.....

I don't know why you couldn't didn't read your links but I've used (untreated) lawn grass seed for mycology Check a farm supply store boss They usually have annual rye grass seed for planting pastures - untreated seed. I get it for around $40 USD for 50 LBS.

Go to home depot, and buy Scotts brand turf builder. It's like $2 per pound (7 pound bag). It's not entirely rye grass, but if you look at my posts, you'll see it grows. No fungicides added. The sticker on the back says... 29.21% boreal creeping red fescue 24.64% gulf annual ryegrass 19.58% quickstart 2 perennial ryegrass 14.58% transcend intermediate ryegrass 9.65% abbey kentucky bluegrass 0.5% other crop seed 1.75% inert matter 0.09% weed seed Based on my mycelium, I think it's pretty safe to assume grass seed is grass seed... Just be sure to make sure (if you buy something else) that it doesn't mention fungicides or other additives. You should be straight though.

Forgot to mention I live in a city in England ... The grass seeds I saw were "pack your own" and I grabbed a handfull out and all the seed looked exacly the same even though it was rye grass and Festuca rubra. So grass seed is grass seed al long as it hasn't been treated ? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hey Raziel. A number of people here have successfully grown sclerotia on whole brown rice (not grinded/flour). Here is one: http://forums.mycotopia.net/fungi-gr...questions.html ('Philosophers stones' pics and questions.) Good luck! |

If you stick to seed, untreated is all that should matter. If you really break it down, all we're doing is assisting in the decomposition of biodegradable organic matter. Honestly, I've tossed weed stems and seeds into a jar while giggling like a school girl.

Forgot to mention, I like England. Been to Portsmouth for the celebration of Trafalgar. Various navies around the world were there. Was fun as hell...until I looked the wrong way crossing the street and almost got ran over... Us Americans are stupid... I was even called a dumb wanker...

No trip to England is complete till you get called a Dumb Wanker lol. Yes most grass seeds seem to work fine but Annual rhy is usually mentioned due to its lower cost if you are buying a good sized bag of it. I have used a few different mixes and they all seem to work fine. Just beware the fungicides. Enjoy |

If I choose to go with brown rice shall I just use whole brown rice minus the vermiculite instead of grass seeds, will that work ? Also... Does anyone have any experience with Psilocybe Tampanensis ? How is it compared to Mexicana regarding yield, potency, growing technique etc. |

If youve got a Knights garden centre near you they have a mix called "Tuff-grass" which is mostly rye grass and works excellently. As hip said give it a good wash and dont over cook it as it just turns to a congealed porridge. Didnt have much luck with Browm rice and variety wise Gallindoi was best and tampanensis worst for amount and magic.

![]() | Excellent point. Annual rye grass seed is smaller than perennial Water content in the jars has to be adjusted for seed size. Also the addition of 1/4 tsp. of gypsum or calcium carbonate should help 'loosen' them up after PC'ing. That's what I use.

Thnak you everyone for the help, I am going to go with this and not brown rice after all. http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/invt/6477640 The ratio is 2:1 seed/water but is there anything I need to do before PC'ing like cook them or anything or do I just mix and PC. I will add some Gypsum Myc thanks for the tip. How long should teh jars be PC'ed for aswell ??? I will be using Tampanensis by the way |

It's your choice. I just think that rye berries and brown rice are whole lot tastier (in sclerotia) for that matter. But the one time I got a jar of it from Holland it was actually on rye grass and it wasn't bad.
