Birthing cakes.

Crazy question here... I just birthed a couple pints and had to result to using a fork to pull em out... They broke. 1 came out in 3 chunks, the other 4.

Does anyone know any secret tricks to pulling the cakes out in a whole piece? Also, has anyone tried greasing the jar with some veggie oil before PC?

If not, I can try that as an experiment and keep people posted although I'm sure some of that'll run to the bottom of the jar during PC... Works for betty crocker, maybe it'll work for cubensor the shroom god...

Check this out (Stuck Cake / Tough Birth / Removing from Jar), I uploaded a video way back when for my technique.

Be sure to sterilize the butterknife!

Did you try bashing the jar upside down on a pillow to loosen the cake first? Or a phone book (not hard enough that you break it)?

I beat it with my hands... I almost had it halfway out, smacked the bottom of the jar, and it went back in... What a pain. I like the knife video and I'll try that on friday. Wont matter much on friday since those pints are going bulk, but if it works, I'll stick to pints for cakes as well. Scary thing is...the post under the video says he has the same Keyboard as you...and so do I. Microsoft Wireless comfort keyboard1.0A. At least that's what mine says on the bottom... Paired with a Logitech G3, I have comfort AND smooth aiming while gaming!

I'm such a geek...

I recently had a cake stuck in a jar and ripped it in two from too much pulling. I took the two pieces of the cake and after a good dunk, fit the pieces back together and put the cake into the FC. 2 days later the myc had recovered and grown back together, the tear was gone. That cake is now back into one piece and fruiting nicely. If your cakes aren't tore up too much, you might give that a try.

I've had success with making an extra big corkscrew out of a clothes hanger and sterilizing it before twisting it into the cake... just wipe it with alcohol each time you use it....works wonders I'll post a pic of it in a bit.

Edit: Couldn't find my old one so I made this quick...you need to make the spacing a bit more even between rows of wire so that it causes minimal damage when screwing it into the cake....but it only take 5 mins to make it properly. I just put a round poll of the appropriate diameter in the vice and twisted the clotheshanger around...if your carefull it will be symetrical and work very well....no more bangning jars over and over lol

I basically did what moose said to 1, and tossed it into the FC on top of a verm layer... The other one is in chunks stuck on top of each other, not quite like a puzzle in the incubator with DEC. I don't plan on doing too much with cakes considering how my bulk experiments are working, but I'll definitely give the butter knife and corkscrew methods a try... I already have the FC going...why not keep it full at all times?

So yeah, failed removals will always be bulk... I figure I can fit 8 pint cakes in the FC, so that'll leave plenty more for bulk endeavors with the other cakes...
