![]() | Oyster spawn from dowels?
Wat would be the best sub. for some oyster mushroom dowels. Popcorn should work fine right. Would one dowel per jar be enough for a fast colonization and wat would be the temp should be around 80 for incubation? this is my first grow but im thinking im gonna dig this hobby. Usually can grow the shit out of anything so Ive been wondering if that goes for the fungi kingdom to. |

Oysters are very aggressive and will grow well on any grain substrate. They LOVE popcorn but will do well on WBS too and it's cheaper. As Hip says, you've got lots of reading to do if this is your first grow, but oysters are pretty forgiving since they are so aggressive... hard to kill them and they're contam resistant. Just don't expect any other species to be as easy if you decide to move on later. I did an oyster grow using wooden dowels last year. You'll need a lot more than one dowel per spawn jar/bag. I used 3/4 quart jars (recycled pasta jars) and 1/2 quart ziplocks with about 8 dowels in each one. Here is my grow log from that project, although i didn't start it till after i had already spawned the fully colonized grain to newspaper: http://forums.mycotopia.net/holding-...l-oysters.html

![]() | dowels to grain
So i borrowed my moms pc,dug through basement and found jars, had my own popcorn. I decided to skip the presoak, and throw the white popcorn in a bag and pc it for 60 min. The seal wouldnt hold, so after diggin aroudn on here i found someone suggesting stretching the rubberthingy, worked great. There done so i pat dry them and load the jars. The problem is my moms pc is only meant for half pint jars, all i found were pint. I decided to throw my jars in the oven for and hour at 350 then left them in there all night. Dont know if it will contam or not but i love experiments so ill find out. didnt use all my spawn just in case |

The pre-soak is important to allow the various endospores to germinate and be killed in the PC. Proper grain hydration is a important variable in our hobby. good luck, ggod | |

yea u understood me. If it fails o well. I learned what not to do. That was the whole point of this. And i still have some spawn to try again. How long does it take the endospore to germinate. The corn was def. hydrated after the pcing. Would 1 hour + in the oven at 350 sterilize at all. The mycelliums growing well in the corn, Havent seen any contams but its only been maybe two days so its still pretty early i figure. |

well. two out of my three jars contamed. I dug the spawn that wasnt contamed out and throught it in another jar with wet cardboard. seems to be doing good. not turning funny colors just bright white. The one that didnt contame. is about 90 percent done. just one spot about and inch wide by two inches long on one side. but you can see the threadlike mycelium eating into it. So it can be done with a oven(didnt use a glove box so the contames could of been after the baking) but probally not very effectivly. |
