Which spawn is better WBS or popcorn?

Is there a better spawn material used over the other...WBS or popcorn? Or is it all by personal prefference? I have some brazilian LC that I wanna knock up some spawn with and then spawn to h-poo. Any help would be great!

wbs is used by more folks, no doubt of that.

I really like mixing corn and wbs 50/50. It colonizes faster then either alone, but it is a PITA to prep because the corn requires more soaking/cooking.

WBS is less expensive than corn, and when broken up before spawning can provide a lot more innoculation points. I've never used WBS so I can't comment on how fast it grows or how easy it is to prepare, but popcorn is very easy to prep and grows fast.

I gotta ask this before I head off to get me some WBS......I can't just put some h-poo/verm into a spawn bag, pastuerize it, then knock it up with the LC instead of using the WBS?

It won't grow very fast and won't have as many nutrients without the grain in it. It would likely contam or stall before it grows out. LC wouldn't give it a high enough spawn to substrate ratio. You could try The slurry in a hurry tek but that would still require you having at least a colonized pf cake.

I like Field Rye the best, Wheat ( which Hip recommended) colonized quickly, but sticks together too much. If it were not for the clumping, it would be the bomb diggity. THirdly, straight millet, Slower to colonize but does not clump.

Next experiment might be some combos of grains. wheat and millet cause I can't get field rye right now.

Recently started using WBS and am currently using a mix of milo and millet. Love it - colonizes very fast when hydrated right.

I think the best grain is the one you practice with until you master hydrating it effectively.

That said, I'm a popcorn man all the way.

Your mileage may well vary...

My favorite way for spawn... been mixing it for years.

i use both. i like both. wbs is cheaper in the end. but popcorn has less chance of trich for some reason.

ive gone years without very many contams in jars with wbs. however, this year recently went through about 145 contamed quarts to trich alone. tried everything and every method possible for the grain tek. the ones that usually work without a flaw didn't work these 15 or so trials. but. the popcorn was 100 percent contam free. so during heavy trich season. usually hits me every 4 years or so. i switch up to pcorn.

also pcorn stores longer in the fridge with masters than wbs. wbs is much faster during spawn run than pcorn. while pcorn is much faster in the jars than wbs. ill usually have popcorn grain jars done in about 5 days without a shake. while wbs jars might take a bit longer. thats excluding liquid cultures and slurry tek.

but i like both. for price id say wbs. but if your having trich issues id say pcorn. pcorn is really easy to get moisture content
right too.

i flow both ways. at times ill even do rye berry.

pcorn seems to colonize more quickly for me but takes like 24+ hours to make its also larger so less inoc points.

WBS takes about 2.5 hours to finish up colonizes slightly slower for me i like to use it for g2g because of the multiple inoc points it provide with all the smaller grain

i dunno i do them both whichever i feel like i guess its good to mix it up a bit

I was NEVER able to get the moisture in rye berries right. I kinda thought folks were screwing with me suggesting it...'till I read The Mushroom Cultivator.

Still never could get the water just right and finally gave up...

i didn't exactly 'recommend' wheat

like when you can't find rye...

Why choose between pcorn and WBS? I've tried both and was unhappy each way. WBS contamed almost 100% of the time, pcorn 50%

I use whole brown rice exclusively now and it cheap and very contam resistant. Breaks up beautifully for spawn. Give it a try.

My wheat berries didn't have problems clumping or sticking together at all, did you rinse yours thoroughly?

How do you prep that? I bet its a tad expensive.

whatever works for you-
a few pennies a pound price diff doesn't matter much
