![]() | Scrape these cakes?
Well, to start with let me say SWIM screwed up the normal PF tek, mostly by piss poor planning on his part, and then again by not remembering all his instructions correctly... SWIM went on a camping trip for a week about the time the cakes should have been birthed, left them with a FOAF but FOAF decided that without verm he didn't feel confident doing the birthing. So, two weeks after full colonization SWIM finally birthed his cakes and, not remembering his instructions correctly, soaked them about a half hour, then into a dry perlite FC. SWIM then rewatched the PF videos and OOOPS, 24 hours after the first time, dunked again for 24 hrs this time, and then cased in verm and set on wet perlite. Now its been 3 days and aside from a little swell here and there SWIM has seen no action from his cakes. It has been a bit below good temps here so SWIM added a heating pad under his FC and since adding (2 days) has kept a nice sweat on the walls of the FC. Would you recommend scraping them, or am I just being imaptient? Maybe they dried out too much before birthing? BRF/Verm cakes inoc w/GT multiprore. SWIM ha one more cake that the innoc only took on two sides so it was a week or so behind the others. (pics attached) Thanks in advance Only my third post, usually everything I could think to ask is in the archives... much love for the tope |

Waiting 2 weeks to birth a cake isn't a big deal. Should be fine. You birthed them onto moist Perlite, right? Those cakes aren't sitting on dry Perlite are they? PF never made any videos, by the way. Probably you mean RRs videos. Hell of a nice tie he wears, isn't it? 24 hours is a little too long for a dunk. Not a guarantee of failure, but it definitely doesn't speed things up. Keep yer dunks to around 12 hours and do them in the fridge in the future. Get the heating pad out of there - those things are a major fire hazzard. Don't scrape - doesn't help at all IME. Kind of like cold shocking (just slows cubensis down). Way too many holes in that terrarium, IMHO. I say be patient.

Welcome to Mycotopia PDX! I like your avatar, friend of yours? Just be patient it will go. I know the pain of watching and waiting, I'm doing the same thing right now

Avatar just a pic I happen to be fond of, I'd certainly like to make her acquaintance though ![]() Perlite is now moist, screwed up first round and did it on dry, was left that way about 24 hrs. Will be sure to dunk a bit less next time, 24 hrs was what they said in the video (which is not of course PF, but based on the tek I gather, its the "let's grow some shrooms" series on youtube). The heating pad makes a big difference in humidity and temps have been dipping some at night here, would you suggest another way to keep the mushies warm? Terrarium is borrowed, I'll be sure to vent it a bit less when I build my own |

The humidity is actually condensation (warm interior vs. cool exterior equals condensation on the walls). Much better to keep internal humidity up by misting the walls/lid with a spray bottle when you fan them - otherwise your cakes are loosing water to evaporation. Shrooms will grow fine at any temp 70F or above. Cool at night isn't going to mess things up at all, just things down a bit. A little slow is way better than coming home to a fire.

Those cakes aren't sitting ON the perlite, right? Need to be on a plate, foil, etc.... If your terrarium is vented, close the vents with tape or some such material, as you don't want / need vents for cakes (but you may for casings... all terrariums aren't meant for the same substrates). ![]() soliver | |

OK, cakes on foil, and terrarium closed most of the way up with medical tape, I left a couple of holes open on each side, and can't get to the ones on the bottom very well without disturbing the cakes more than I want to (this is possibly an unfounded fear). Grateful you guys are here to help with all my newb mistakes ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh, and after picking them up to put on foil I misted the shit out of the walls and perlite, trying not to get any direct mist on the cakes... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | A little advice...
If you want more people to respond to your posts ditch the SWIM thing. It makes everyones head SWIM. I'm guilty of it just as you are. Have a little confidence in our friend Hippie3 here and also be sure you proxy and what not.

Sounds good. Open the terrarium and fan out the stale air 2-3 times a day and mist the walls if they get dry - you should be fine. Cakes are very hardy little buggers!

Just a quick update because I'm exited, loving this stuff more every day ![]() One jar was behind the others in colonization, then suddenly decided to start pinning in the jar, I birthed it directly to the foil rather than dunking with the idea that I might suffocate the pins if I dunked. Steamed some verm with my next batch of jars and used that to add a top casing for it. Good thinking or flawed? It will flush harder second flush I think? Anyway, one nice pinset bunch in the 4th pic I'm super happy about, enjoy the pics, sorry if I seem like I'm spamming with this stuff, just happy about it ![]() ![]() |

I usually just pick off any pins that grow invitro in the jar as a personal preference.. it's growing compacted against the jar wall, you're better off putting those nutes into upward-growing shrooms. You don't have to steam the vermiculite.. do you mean you put some in a jar to sterilize it? Was it moist verm? Did you re-moisten to case the cakes? Methinks the pins are growing from the bottom of the cake due to the reflectivity of the tinfoil. If you cut out tinfoil circles slightly larger than the mason jar lids, then there won't be much tinfoil to reflect light at the bottom and you'll see less pins down there. Again, personal preference ![]() Either way those pins look awesome ![]()

Wet verm before I steamed it, added a bit more water after too, have hope for those pins that started in the jar, but if not the rest of the cake is pimpling nicely. I probably wouldn't have steamed it if I wasn't already steaming some cakes tonight, thought I'd throw it in for good measure. Yeah, one cake seems to only be pinning right at the bottom, I was thinking not only cut the foil but maybe add some more light from above? I've been just leaving the closet and the window open all day, maybe shine a lamp? |
