![]() ![]() | Rye grain prep question
I just cooked my grain and drained going colander to colander. It felt sticky so I rinsed with water. Water is not dripping from the colander but it does get my hand wet when I pickup a handful. Would it be okay to load my jars to pc or do I need to wait till it's dry to the touch?

A towel works great let them site well spread on it and within minutes water should be gone if the rye are far from being simmed to their full potential some water isn't a problem if some grains did open due to the simmering process then verm or appropriate drying should be applied

Rye is a nice grain to use, partly because you can just add the dry grain to the mason jar with just the right amount of water and go straight to the PC (no prep at all!). In fact, I've done that with WBS too, so long as it has minimal to no corn in it (corn in WBS is usually cracked, so when it cooks it gets incredibly slimy whereas popcorn comes as whole intact kernels). Adding gypsum (~1 gram per quart) is a good suggestion. It helps make shaking the grain up a little easier and has trace nutrients needed by the mushrooms. Here's a rye tek from the archives: http://archives.mycotopia.net/discus...tml?1010193132 Good luck!

That was the tek I was actually trying to link to but didn't have time to search for it (I forgot the exact name). The search engine doesn't like terms with three or fewer letters so when I tried searching "rye prep" it only searched "prep." Grrrr.
