prep spawn jars

So I recently made an attemped at makeing spawn and failed badly. I had 12 qt. of WBS (3/4 full). So I soaked grain for 18-24 hours, drained grain, loaded the jars, then added verm.
I then put my jars together: jar, foil, lid then ring, then more foil.
I then pressure cooked the jars. Waited for them to cool. Then innoculation took place from an LC of PE. Then off to the incubater.
Well, five days in all the jars smell like they are fermenting. So what did I do wrong, I know it had to have been something I did, I just can't figure out what. My LC is clean, I already checked that with a couple of BRF jars.

Confused

incorrect.
there should be no foil under the lid, that prevents a seal
letting room air leak into your jars, ruining them.

I would suggest letting the grains surface dry and then load the jars..instead of using verm for excess moisture...it takes a little longer that way but it works.

I did drain the grain, for an half an hour. Is this not long enough?

30 minutes should be plenty of time, and is probably not the cause of your issue. I think what Hip said seems more likely. Also, there are plenty of other small details that could cause problems, so when assessing problems without pictures, the more info the better.

BTW: Did you only soak the grain that whole time or did you also simmer it? If just soaking, the grain may not have been sufficiently hydrated when you PC'd it (but that would likely result in different symptoms of failure than you reported).

Gotta rinse that stuff after the hydration too.

I only soak my wbs (hot tap water soak) and it works great.
