![]() | Corn jars, possible problem
Hey all Ive got some pint corn jars goin', and they're looking good about 5 or 6 days in, the plan was to shake the jars as they colonize as i've read. My concern is that i may have prepared the lids incorrectly, the lids at the moment have one inoculation hole and are covered with aluminum foil. Im worried that the foil might not suffice when it comes to shaking the jars and keeping bad stuff out, Id hate to get some contams from shaking it too hard and letting bad air through the hole. Would it be OK to let them colonize without shaking them and fruit them like BRF cakes or break them up after they're done and case them?? This is my first time with corn, trying to be careful. any insight will be greatly appreciated. THANKS -peace |

i'd be more worried about the foil preventing FAE, which could stall the growth. and stagnant air is a great place for contams to grow. i'd say you should put the jars in your glovebox and tape some tyvek over the holes. that way you've got filtered air coming in, and you won't have to worry any about problems when you shake. if you don't shake, your jars will take a really long time.. and the faster, the better (less times for contams to grab a hold). i wouldn't try fruiting it as a cake - whole grains are not known to fruit well without spawning. i would suggest breaking up and spawing to another substrate (casing is optional) after full colonization. good luck!

Micropore tape over holes works great. I would just leave the jars alone until they finish. No reason to shake popcorn jars. Popcorn runs so quickly that there is usually not a significant difference in time to completion you shake at 50%. Rye and WBS are very different. Shaking is required (unless you are REALLY patient) with rye berries or WBS. Exactly what do you mean by "corn jars," by the way?

I thought you were shaking to speed up colonization. You must shake popcorn before spawning. I like to wait 24 hours after shaking (for the popcorn to recover) before spawning.
