![]() | Supercake vs Rye as spawn?
Hey everyone I'm thinking of getting some spawn bags from mycrotopia for the purpose of using as spawn once colonized for some sandbags. I'm wondering which substrate I should choose for inoculation with liquid culture. Im going to use either the rye or the supercake mycromix as theyre the best deals and shipping is a concern. Ive used rye before and simple brf and verm but never the supercake. My primary concern is speed, ultimately I want to use the substrate that is most likely the colonize the fastest. Im going to use probably atleast 2-3ccs of multispore liquid culture and will probably break it up and mix it once its 50% colonized. Initially I was going to get the supercake bags and fruit them invitro or cut off the bags once colonized and fruit them like logs in a chamber but since each bag is only 3 cups versus 24 for each sandbag I figure Ill wait the extra week for the better harvest. Another concern is I have to time the orders right as the come pasteurized and should be spawned soon as they arrive. I also considered doing monotubs but I cant order the horse manure and ordering the donkey doo is 35 for doo/straw and 30 for just doo but thats approx 2 gallons or 36 cups, since the 2 sandbags are a total of 3 gallons or 48 cups of doo/coir for 40 and all you need to do is add spawn not buy any tubs filters etc it makes the most sense. Also since Im not in the states ill most likely have to pay 20 for each "item" which really adds up when the things ur getting themselves are 30-40 to begin with and u need multiple etc... so I need to be efficient obviously. Overall though it seems like sandbags are the best deal tho. Kinda went off on a rant there but anyone with help or advice is appreciated

the supercake is basicaly hte same as BRF cakes just some additives if your looking for speed adn you have good clean LC id go with the rye you can shake it to spread that myc if i used LC to rye id expect that shit to be ready in a week

Wow, lotta info in that post. You write densely, man! Rye bags will run faster than supercake bags. Supercake bags will produce more mushrooms when fruited invitro or like logs. Rye by itself will fruit, but you have to case grain for it to fruit really well. I would get the rye if you want to spawn a larger project. I would get the supercake if you want to fruit invitro or like logs. Get the Sandbags if you want a complete environment. Get the bulk doo if you want to do a tub. A tub will fruit better than a Sandbag if all the conditions are optimal (humidity, FAE, temperature, etc.). A Sandbag will fruit better than a tub that is poorly cared for.

Point taken. I should have said, "In general a volume of substrate fruited invitro won't produce quite as much as the same volume fruited in a terrarium under optimal conditions." Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of invitro and I've done a lot of playing with it (but I use spawn bags): ![]() ![]() You can get some very good results invitro. But I think you can get slightly better results from the same volume of substrate in a terrarium.

![]() | Yay!
thank you so much for making this thread? i was wondering the exact same thing as far as grain or cakes for sandbags.. sounds like grain is the way to go if working towards sandbags! mush respect to all that posted on this thread. would still love to hear from the man himself! Thanks everyone for great insight.
