![]() | Pressure Cooker or baby bottle sterilizer?
I've just had a thought, would a baby bottle sterilizer be good enough to do your jars? It only takes a little time and if its good enough for a baby its good enough for some mushrooms? Only thing i can think that would be bad is if you wanted to cook rye grain, it wouldnt last long enough. It would be alot quieter than a pc aswell so if you have to be a bit secretive like me it would be good.

i have never owned one, so i had to google it. seems like it works via steam with no pressure. dont think it would work in our application, as there is not enough pressure. nor do the temps get high enough. another down side would be they dont really hold much in terms of volume. model i looked at only held 4 bottles.

Yeah, I also took a peek at those before I got a PC. But boots420 is right. There is a lot of difference between sterilizing an empty or fluid-filled bottle, and sterilizing a more or less solid substrate of several inches depth.

Not as much noise as I did when my stuff contaminated because I didn't have a PC. :-) Mine doesn't make much noise. It huffs and puffs so you can definitely hear it if you're in the kitchen, but it's not bad.

Ill be using it in my room with a portable gas stove so itll be a suspicious noise coming from my room.

If I was you I'd find a way to move out of dad's if he is that anti-substance but that's just me. No reason to get you or your family in trouble for any reason. There has got to be a time of day when he isn't home and you know it. My PC is a Presto and when it get's rattling at 15psi it really is somewhat loud. If it's in my kitchen and Im taking a shower in the bathroom around the corner I can somewhat still hear it.

No chance of moving out any time soon with the money problems im having lol although i would like to. We both work the same hours so theres never a time when he isnt in. I guess a PC is out of the question then haha. Will a saucepan with a lid do pretty much the same thing?

I bought a PC before I ever bothered ordering spores. Plenty of people have success with steaming in larger pots etc. but I like to KNOW my stuff is gonna be clean. Just a personal preference for me. Bought my 16qt PC at walmart 6 years ago or so for 40 bucks on sale and it's performed flawlessly ever since.

Pressure cooking should'nt make any noise but a slight hiss every 15 or 20 minutes if it is set right. You still have 15PSI when it is quiet. It should only hiss when the pressure exceeds 15PSI and then only for a second or two. That's why a 1/2 inch of water in the bottom should last for two hours or more. Mark the knob on the stove when you find the right temp so you can be more accurate. Gluck

You can see pics of it here: http://forums.mycotopia.net/fungi-gr...er-family.html (New member of the family) Not to advocate going behind your dad's back, but do you have a friend's house where you can set up partial ops? Just get your jars clean and loaded with substrate, then take them home to finish the inoculation and fruiting. I dunno, just a thought.

you could just steam steralize them for 90 min in a pan of water on the stove just make sure it doesnt spill over into the jars and get them wet. you can fractinal steralize them if you wanted to but you can only do brf and popcorn in the steam method other grains have to be pced. masterplain88 |

I've heard of good results from the fractional with equivalent results. Never done it myself with grain, but some threads here have spoken well of it. As for the baby bottle sterilizers, there have been billions of bucks thrown away on these things. Babies don't need anything sterile, 'though clean is good. Those units probably don't do much anyway, and nobody knows the difference but the people selling them. Does Mommy boil her nipples?

If the bottle sterilizer happens to be shaped nice with some kind of rack that would hold jars, eh, maybe. Fractional sterilization works very, very effectively if you follow a full 3 day process. You can do grains and you only need steam/boiling water - but it is hella time consuming. PCs are definitely the easiest solution.

If your looking for more stealth Ive got the perfect option for you. Its the cuisinart electronic pressure cooker, that thing is great. Its not very noisy a constant tssssss sound but its fairly quiet and its set and forget basically. Its got a timer on it that will go to 99 minutes and doesnt count down till it gets to pressure. Only downside is they are only 6qts but if your using PP5 bags thats plenty of space unless your doin heavy bulk. They list on amazon for 100$ I cant remember what costco had em for awhile back, either 60 or 80$. I absolutely love the ease and convenience of being able to walk away. Never have been able to find a PSI rating on it anywhere, just says high and low. High setting melted a PE bag beyond recognition(for testing purposes only)
