log and plug question

I've been finding tons of recently fallen ash and oak around my house lately. it's in various stages of decomposition from almost robust and healthy to getting soft from sitting on the ground for a year or more.

what success could I expect from plugging these logs with edible shrooms?

i'd be looking at how over-run with mycelium the logs already are.
if something else has gotten to it, you'd probably want to be putting a lot of plugs in and/or make sure it's a voracious strain.

if it were me, i'd stay away from anything soft and sitting on the ground for a year. stands to reason that the fresher the fall, the better chance you'll have (as far as i know however, many, if not most trees have anti-fungal properties, which is why it's suggested to wait at least a couple of weeks after they come down

but then, it depends on who's time and resources you're talking about using. if you're into experiments, work away.

good luck!

I would if i where you (and it was my property of course) cut those trees up into about 2-4 foot sections and bury the peices half way into the ground.....the plug away. The wood dowels needed are pretty cheap and for a good flush the time you will spend is well worth it. Good luck and I hope to hear of a grow log from you next summer.

I would fall fresh trees, wait 2 weeks in spring and then just before the leaves start cut them down and plug away. At this time they have the highest nutritional content. Logs that are already producing or that have been down for a while will not do well for you from what I have read. good luck
