Corn Syrup Agar Recipe

I remember seeing someplace a light corn syrup agar recipe but I can't seem to find it right now. Does anyone know what this recipe entails? Or does anyone have another basic agar recipe I can use with household items?

does the search feature search the vaults too?

Here's another thread which has a recipe for homemade agar which you may be interested in. Everything needed is available at the local grocery store.

A good rule of thumb with agar and LCs is to shoot for a concentration of 4%-5% sugar (by mass).

Thank you that looks like it might work perfectly!

I guess this is the best piece of advice that I could use. How much agar would you want in your concentration?

If you are using lab grade agar, 15gm per liter of water should be enough to form a solid gel.

If you are using food grade agar, you might want 20gm-25gm per liter of water. Food grade should have a recipe on the package, though - just follow the "hard gel" prep instructions.

Try to stick to no more than 4%-5% sugar for good fungi agar. That is the only real "rule." And that isn't really a rule, more or less will work.

Best agar recipe depends on what you are doing with it.

Long term storage agar (in a slant or a petri) should be jacked up full of nutrition. An Amaranth/oatmeal/bee pollen/dog food provides a nice spectrum of nutes for storage.

If you are just growing out cultures, testing samples or isolating - a basic LME or dextrose agar is your best choice.

Agar for quick temporary growth should not have a lot of "extra" nutrients - those nutes could feed contams.
