![]() | horrible yield from cakes
My friend has been growing some cambodians on some brown rice crakes and has experienced some pretty crappy results. He got the jars pre-packaged and pre sterilized along with a 10cc of spores. After letting the jars colonize and throwing away the cakes that looked bad he was left with 4 jars. Each cake would only sprout up fruits in certain parts of the cake yielding on average about 5 or 6 scrawny mushrooms. So far after about 3 flushes from each cake he has only got about an ounce dried form all four cakes. He doesn't know went went wrong. There appeared to be adequate humidity, the tempeture was good inside the chamber and they got a good amount of indirect sunlight everyday.Could it be the strain, the cakes, the spores? (Or maybe its the grower lol ) Any advice that I could pass onto him would be greatly appreciated so the next time can go better.

An once dried from four cakes is pretty good. Did you dunk the cakes between flushes?

Invitro results are usually a little less than fruiting normally. If you got an once dried from four cakes, you are doing pretty well. We need lots of details and pics to really help.

you guys must have made a mistake in your math cause i agree with sam... 6 dry grams is average per cake... 6 x 4 = 24 24 x 3 flushes = 72 which is 2.5oz since u said scrawny it makes me think you have too high humidity and not high enough FAE. were they long, skinny, and somewhat curly? edit: got any holes drilled in the side of the terrarium? that was my mistake my first grow... no holes

Umm, I think you might have made a mistake. Maybe 6gm-8gm (dried material) per cake total - not six dry grams per flush. If you are getting 2.5 oz dry from four 1/2 pint PF cakes, you are a much better grower than me.

He is using a clear tub with a filter patch on the side. Inside the tub he has a nice layer of moist perlite at the bottom. He mist the cakes twice daily and fans out the tub. The mushroom are a nice size, they are pretty much straight but they vary in shape, they just lack density, they are almost completely hollow inside, but have some pretty nice caps.

DON'T mist the cakes. Mist the walls of the tub - not the cakes. Hollow stems are very normal for cubensis.

now im confused... 2.5oz did sound high to me but thats exactly what i remember... 60 wet grams was what i thought i would usually pull off a cake... if thats wrong then its been far too long since ive grown...

who knows lol, its all good. My buddy just thought that the yeild wasn't up to par but maybe thats all you can really expect from the PF method. He's probly just gonna try something else to get better results. By the way I really dig your profile icon, Hunter was the man |

7 grams per cake is a pretty decent/average yield, especially invitro. SWIM has gotten 10 grams from a cake before, but 7 g dried is his average from cakes from multispore inoculations. SWIM has never gotten six dry grams per flush from a cake, only 10 g dried after all flushes (sometimes 6-7 flushes from invitro cakes).

An easy next step to increase yield is to grind up the cakes (you can use a cheese grater or just chuck them in a sterile ziplock and squishy squishy) and mix them with hydrated vermiculite or coir in a pan. That will give the mycelium a lot more water to fruit with.
