This is my very first grow and the pic is of my very first BRF cake. I'm using the PF Tek. It was fully colonized when I took it out of the jar and put it into the terrarium. Once in the terrarium it got a little fuzzy and then turned gray. I read that the gray meant not enough humidity. So, I got a much better ultrasonic humidifier. It then turned back to pure white and grew into a super fuzzy white ball. It's been like that for five days now. Any idea what is going on here? I can't find anywhere where it says that this is normal. And now it is starting to turn gray again. |

That cake has cobweb mold and a very severe case at that. You have two options. 1) Isolate it. INCREASE FAE DRASTICALLY. Mist lighty with H2O2. 2) Toss it and cut your losses. Cobweb is caused by lack of fresh air and a stale environment.

I think that cake is history. Gray is usually cobweb and big ball of cotton candy like that is definitely cobweb. As 'ette said, you have no where near enough fresh air. How often do you fan?

I'm going to abandon this cake. Kinda. I want to see what H2O2 does to the cobweb. I read somewhere that a 10% solution is to be used. Um, is that diluting the already diluted peroxide even further? My bottle of peroxide says that it is 3%. And thanks everyone for the fast replies.

Use store bought peroxide straight. The cobweb will just melt away and disappear. Your humidifier is not generating enough fresh air. You will need to change your design or start fanning. What, exactly, is your FC design?

My FC: Untrasonic humidifier feeds into three 2.5 gallon water bottles (in series) for removing large water droplets. The third bottle distributes to two terrariums. The FC are setup (dripshield, etc) similar to that described in the PF Tek.

Where are your holes for FAE? If you don't have any and aren't fanning that is your issue. You'll need to drill holes near the bottom and near the top for FAE. A couple on each side of the tub should do it. You can cover the holes with breathable tape, or stuff them with polyfill.

A thousand pardons of you both. We all know drugs kill brain cells. Now we have concrete proof...I totally forgot which thread I was replying to... At least I didn't call ya a guy! Jeeze - really sorry! TrippinBawlz - your terrarium design is not going to work as you have it set up. Firstly, I don't think that ultrasonic humidifier is going to deliver enough humidity through all those bottles. Ultrasonics don't generate very much air pressure at all. Those small tubes feeding the tubs are not going to work without pretty high air pressure. Secondly, even with a lot of air pressure, it won't blow in without exit holes in the tub. For fresh/humid air to come into the tub, the existing air in the tub has to be able to come out.

I don't have ventilation holes per se. The humidifier line is 3/8" I.D. so I drilled one small 3/8" hole in the tub for exhaust. The humidifier does provide ample humidity to the tubs, but you guys are probably right that it does not provide sufficient FAE. What size and how many holes should I drill for FAE? Again, thanks for all your help. |

I don't do tubs like that, so I could only through out wild guesses. BUT, here is a killer tub thread from Eatyualive. Lots of tub info. http://forums.mycotopia.net/grow-cha...ngle-tubs.html (Eatyu's How To (dub tubs and single tubs)) Scroll down a couple pages and their are some nice diagrams of where to put the holes and how many to put in.
