![]() | cloning using agar without pressure cooker
i have been reading about how to clone mushrooms using the agar tek, most of them i have noticed that a pressure cooker is required, is there an agar tek that doesnt use a pressure cooker as i have not invested in one yet, i use the fractional sterilisation methood and so far it has not contaminated, they are currently in there first week of colinising. could someone explain to me in simple terms the easiest way to clone using the agar tek without a pressure cokker or if there are any other teks that work just as well thanks p.s the stuff i have been reading about so far has not been that useful to me really as the teks havnt been explained that well.

Cloning and agar work are rather advanced for someone on their first grow with no pressure cooker. That is probably why the cloning teks are confusing to you-- they are written with the more advanced grower in mind and assume that you know certain terms and processes etc. What teks are you looking at and what exactly is confusing about them? Please provide links and specific questions. And no, you can't really do agar work without a PC. You might have success with cardboard cloning though.

Yeah cardboard cloning is a good way for you to get your feet wet. It is super simple to, just place a piece from the inner stem onto cardboard and watch it go! That way you can preserve your good genetics and just transfer them to real agar when you have the chance.

The main reason most do cloning is if they have a huge fruit with good genetics and they want to clone to have flushs of those same fruits. Now for a newbie the best thing to learn first. Is to wait for your first flush or second then learn how to take prints, and make syringes with those prints. That way your able to continue growing w/out putting any other money out. Once you get that down good and understand more about the growing process then you can move on to cloning. Just from my experiance I would say to learn printing and cloning first. The cloning like Bev said is very advanced and difficult for newbs to understand. This is a hobby that you def wanna take your time and learn from the start. Jumping into things like cloning right outta the gate will only confuss you more, and also make for a better chance of Failure. Think if all you do is try and clone from you first run, things might look alright at first but then if they contam you will have nothing left to start over. Thats why its good to do prints first. If you mess up one print you will have more to start from. Just my .02

You only need the pressure cooker to prepare the agar. You might be able to get away by prepping it via fractional sterilization, if it works for cakes it should work just as well for agar. Buckaroo Banzai's Agar For The Masses tek in the Vaults is the best tek for preparing your agar plates.

i disagree with this. as long as the beginner follows sterile procedure then agar is well within his grasp it cant be any harder than judging field capacity for the first time. also agar is usful not just for preserving genetics its also a good way of testing out your inoculant for contaminants. i would say go for it. failure is the key to all greater success. dont be put off by anything. also dont knock those people who have succeeded before you they put allot of study, time, and effort into there work so you may do well to try and be a better student before knocking the teacher.

I was searching for oyster related info last night and found this little gem. It is a PDF with a pictorial on how they do sterile work in other parts of the globe. http://www.mawf.gov.na/Documents/mus...ationsteps.pdf Shows how people in Africa use steam sterilization for agar. Might want to check on it p88prw, it is a pretty good read with some pretty nice pictures also.
