![]() | pressure cooker ran out of water
im not sure if it actually did.call it a brain fart but i cant remeber if i emptied water out of the PC when i was cleaning it. i do know that i took the weight off when i was done and steam came out for a good minute. too me steam is water so im guessing im ok. i do know that rye smells up a room when u open the PC up .i don't know if that related.i had a portable one burner and 1 inch of water and couldn't get the heat up too 15 psi .so i let some of it out and started again .i ran the pc at 13-14 psi to keep the weight from letting out too much steam. is my new AA 921 ruined?????? |

doubtful its ruined. i have ran a pc or two that ran out of water, due to my negligence. theyre still chugging along. always have a set of new gaskets and pressure relief valve handy.

I've had that problem before. One thing to make sure of is that there is enough water before you start pressure cooking (duh) but also make sure the regulator is rocking steadily but not going crazy and spurting out too much steam.

I would think a sudden drop in pressure could possibly crack jars?

![]() ![]() | I do that a lot especially if I am trying to pc a few batches of jars back to back to save a little time. After I am done with the first batch I spray cold water in the pc and on the lid until it isn't hot anymore then load it back up with new jars and cold water.

Why in the HELL would you EVER do something that it says specifically NOT to do in the owners manual? Spraying water on your PC will cause it to warp, and rapid cooling of glass will cause it to shatter. (Take a glass straight out of a hot dish washer and run very cold water in it and see what happens.) A pressure cooker CAN kill you or cause severe steam burns if used improperly. That's the reason they put warnings on them, so that idiots can not sue them for their own neglegence

I let mine depressurize by itself and set it outside to cool if I am in a hurry. I don't advise that anyone pull the weight off while it is still hot. Depressurizing is still part of the PC run IMO and that extra bit of heat and pressure can never hurt. My PC manual also says specifically not to do that.

Again, you aren't supposed to move it until it is cool and depressurized. I have de-jigglered mine in the past only because I was in a hurry, and it was only popcorn and water in it.

I know it is not PC but on my first grow I was so horny to get things going that I took my large pressure cooker outside and set it in a snowbank. I have had dozens of runs since with no problems. In my little pc there is a valve I can unscrew and that releases steam slowly. When I was cooking beans once I forgot about the pot and came back to find that the rubber safety plug had blown and there were bean fragments everywhere. I replaced the plug and it worked fine again for many years. Don't be stupid and don't be afraid.

A good example is when people take a 12 psi pc and try to turn it into a 15 psi pc by taping nickles to the weight that makes a bomb. I AM IN NO WAY SAYING TO DO THIS. I have had the same pc for 5 years. I have prob pc around a thousand of jars in it. Sometimes I do depressurize it just by taking the weight off and I have never had a cracked jar. If you took a hot jar out of the pc and put it in cold water it would shatter. I AM NOT SAYING TO DO THIS. After you take them out of the pc place them on the counter overnight to cool. | |

If you are not saying to do this, why are you saying anything at all? Read my post again, and notice that I did not say anything about the pressure regulator. What I said was running water over the pressure cooker is a BAD idea. Do you have any idea what thermal expansion is? Do you know what metal your PC is made of and how much it increases in size as it heats/cools and what happens with heat transfer if you have it 25% submerged as opposed to 50%? If you do, go for it! If not, you are rolling the dice every time that you do this, with your pressure cooker's life, and possibly your own.

kcm is right - if you cool something extremely hot down to room temperature in a minute, it will warp. It won't warp significantly, but over time it can warp to the point where it won't properly seal around the lid, and will allow steam to exit. Now you have a big pot with a lid that doesn't ft properly. It is extremely dangerous to make a habit out of cooling your PC in cold water. It is also dangerous to remove the jiggler with canning jars inside, allowing it to depressurize at an increased rate. DON'T DO EITHER Glass shattering inside a PC might not hurt you standing in front of it, but have fun cleaning up that mess when it happens.
