![]() | How valuable is a dunk?
Hey everyone Im trying to decide between getting mycrotopia rye bags and spawning to sandbags or just getting supercake mix bags and fruiting them invitro within the bag then removing and dunking in a ziploc and then placing in a new clean ziploc to fruit after each flush. The sandbags are big (24 cups) the supercake bags are small (3 cups) so the supercake are easy to dunk and change to a new bag (clean from spores) while the sandbags are probably extremely hard to dunk or change to the new bag. Shrooms are about 90% water so I imagine being able to dunk after every flush could be quite helpful

Dunking is key. Rehydrating a cake after birthing and after each flush makes for a more even flush, less aborts, and bigger mushies. There are probably more benefits than just those too. Careful when dunking bulk subs though, often they have enough moisture up to or even after the second flush, given you have a good casing layer and proper humidity. Also bulk subs should only be dunked for 1-2 hours at most, unlike BRF cakes which like around 12 hours. Moose |

Think of the difference in weight between a fresh mushie and a dried one. All of that came out of the cake, and needs to be replaced to "fill up" the next batch.

When i do sandbags, i dunk right in the bag and then pour the water out. No need to fuss with pulling it out and then transferring to multiple new bags. As long as you're careful (try not to get the filters wet) it should be fine. I've gone 4 flushes dunking and draining off the original bag with no contam issues. Be sure to wear gloves and be clean when you stick your hand in to harvest though.

stick w/ something that is easy to rehydrate if you are unsure about the difficulty of dunking a sand bag. has anyone ever used an additive in their dunking h2o? I've never heard of it being done, but just wondering.

Some growers use poo tea made from, well, poo or worm castings. Great results, but a higher possibility of contamination. Mydarling has a great PESA grow thread where she uses poo tea, check it out.

thanks for pluggin my thread bev yeah i've use castings tea before and IMO it worked really well.. was lucky to not catch any contams though.... and i wasn't working with a clone either, so it's hard to definitively say whether the castings tea dunked sub was REALLY better than the tap water dunked sub, but judging by similar performance from previous flushes... i'd say it was.most people warn against nutritive dunking fluids though due to higher contam risk, and i think that's good advice. i was probably just lucky.

i was gonna ask if poop could be mixed in!? have thought about that before... how would this be beneficial, poop = nitrogen content, = better potency? i know it's just discussed as a possibility that nitrogen levels can dictate potency but it sounds interesting. thanks. sorry to rob your thread for a second p2k, good luck, either way i'm sure you'll enjoy the results!

Poo tea will not boost potency so much as just provide nutrients to allow the substrate to continue to produce more fruits. Notice how your subs get smaller and smaller with each successive flush? That's not just water loss, the mycelium is actually eating and breaking down the substrate. Poo tea gives some nutrients back, but it's best not to put in the additives that do improve potency during a dunk. That should be added to the substrate during initial preparation. EDIT: I should qualify that by saying there is a lot of debate over what additives, if any actually improve potency. Tons of people swear by Hippie3's supercake formula though.

yeah usually swim's cakes shrink about 1/5 of the size with each flush. i see though, provide the nutrients (poo/what have you) initially. just figured it might be beneficial to mix into a dunk. cool info
