![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | culture syringe or slant?
hmm.... 55 bucks. damn! couple months back i bought a culture syringe of some oysters from sporeworks. shot it in rye jars that hip made. never took off tho. so ive been wanting to give a second attempt a go and buy a culture slant instead. then i saw the price. i was thinkin culture slants were meant to only colonize 1 jar. then g2g the rest. or am i wrong? how big are these slants? is it worth it? or should i go with a culture syringe again and see if it was just some kind of bad luck?

The slant alone can innoc quite a few jars. g2g is a great way of prolonging a strain, but IMO its easiest to make a LC. Take a bit of the myc from the slant and start two or three LC's, use the rest to innoc jars. LC and a syringe has less chance of contamination and is easier to work with than g2g. Are the slants you are considering monocultures? Moose |

A monoculture is when myc has been grown out on agar and different sectors have been transferred several times to new agar plates until you are left with a monoculture/single strain. You can see the different strains of myc quite easily on agar. I'm not top notch with all the technical terminology, I would suggest doing a little research. Having a monoculture isn't critical to growing, but often times isolating a strain can increase yield and decrease grow times. If you haven't done so already, I would strongly suggest downloading the RR videos, called "Let's Grow Mushrooms". Should be able to find them on most torrent sites. Lots of excellent info there and shows how to do just about everything mycology. Moose |

...not sure why i posted that... seeing as how mono means 1. im drinkin right now so plz excuse my stupidity. but yea, im not sure what im going to be receiving from sporeworks.com. altho to me. its seems much easier just droppin it into 1 jar and then doing g2g in a glovebox. than splittin it up and droppin into several while worrying about how clean your tools are. and i have seen the videos. i watched the entire thing before attempting my first grow

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Slaanting twards slants-2
I have been thinking about doing the same thing bro, from my understanding and listening to the one's who know, when using a slant (testube) it's a little harder to isolate a wedge (get a good swipe) than from a petri dish. So if you are trying to isolate because you might think there is a better selection of what you're working with, sometimes the selected material is at the bottom of the slant (thus to access it, you have to go through other parts of the medium in the tube.). But that is for isolating multi-spores and stuff. It was my understanding that slants keep better, but I am not certain yet, from what I have gathered. But if the culture has been isolated for you...then you buy more slats, more medium and rack the initial culture into a farm, so it stays young. So it was my little minds guess, that one slant of a good iso culture can spawn for quite a while, thus a good investment. I haven't used Spore works, never had a reason not to use The good spore, Hillbilly, has quality product and quality service, but I don't think he does slantz. You could isolate your own slants and dishes, for about half the price, but why go through the trouble. I am getting an oyster isolate in an lc soon, but I am not set up for the petri/slant department as of yet. Good luck, I am going to see how you do, to help me decide which route I will go. Staypuffed _jose~

Cloning's a great way of selecting the characteristics you want too. Very easy to make LC's from cloned tissue as well, and they will keep and last for quite some time. Check out Irishlion's LC tek, it's a great recipe that's always worked for me. Moose |
