![]() | What instead Of BRF For PF Tek?
Got my experiment head on and thought which of these would be a good idea to try? Breakfast cereal: (crushed up like BRF) Shredded Wheat Bran Flakes what about any other cereals i guess only the "better for you" cereals would really work good. And also what about wholegrain pasta? again crushed fine like flour. Thanx |

Have a looksie in here: http://forums.mycotopia.net/fungi-gr...tive+substrate (Alternative Substrate Thread) If you poke around topia you will see stories of people using oatmeal , pancake mix and other cereals. Good luck

I have used Whole Grain Cheerios before. Worked out Careful cause it compacts real easy and absorbed a LOT more water than I was not expecting and had to add more verm as not to have it too moist. IMO the whole grain pasta would be energy spent elsewhere. When you grind it up your get whole grain flour. And you can buy that for cheep everywhere. Bob's RedMill has a Millet four I want to try. Millet is in WBS so has to be ok to use. (damn you posted as I was) Check out Hyphe's Alternative substrate thread for some ideas already worked on http://forums.mycotopia.net/fungi-gr...te-thread.html (Alternative Substrate Thread)

Lots of substitutions available for BRF...but why? Brown rice is cheap and proven. You could use Amaranth flour, Rye flour, cornmeal...just about any ground whole grain. Any grain you choose will work better if you grind it yourself. More nutritious and you can leave it "chunky." Completely powdered flour doesn't work as well as chunky flour.

Just the mad scientist in me i guess got my whole rice jars going and just spawned some WBS to coir in an old 2ltr ice cream tub. So i guess i was just lookin' to have some fun with "wacky" sub's. Also none of the shops (big and small) seem to stock organic brown rice flower and i don't own a coffee grinder sure i could order online but i found that the shipping costs were sometimes twice the amount the flour was!!. Another thing if i was to dry up some HPoo and mix 'till powder could i add this powder to my coir when soaking (also add Maxicrop seaweed extract) or would the HPoo require "treating" before use (don't smell just nice and earthy ). And could a bit be added to a PF style cake. Thanx.

Try spawning a cake to a straw nug. Search the archives there are alot of teks that are quite easy. Check out some of the Rev's grows. This one of Swim's was done with the tall grass-like weeds growin along the highway. 2nd flush of 3,not too bad for weeds. Red

Gonna spawn a whole rice cake to coir coffee and Maxicrop later in another 2ltr ice cream tub. Whats the rule for peeking in bulk spawns? patience seems to be my biggest problem and i would hate to spoil me grow 'cause i couldn't keep the lid on it! how long do you guys/gals leave your's before peeking?. (Not like growin' the when my ocd would get me lookin' every hour!!). Thanx.

It is best to not peek very much, keep it in the dark as much as possible. I take a look after a day or 2, and it's usually spawned in 7 to 8. I am not a fan of coffee in mushroom cultivation. Others swear by it. I have only seen contams when using it (maybe it's just my methods). Maxicrop? Isn't that seaweed/kelp? I dunno if that will do much for you. Coir is excellent. Good luck. |

I'll mix worm castings in lake water, bring it up to pasteurization temps and add a brick of coir, I use that as a coir only substrate and found the absorption really kick starts the growth. very contam free and great for tubs and buckets. But then I also am known to make a five gallon cake and fruit it pf style, though the effort is only really worth it if you want showpiece sized shrooms. B+ will get a good 18-20 inches sometimes and once dried they make wonderful gifts as a bouquet. We all like to experiment just be willing to suffer the setbacks as well.

Try not to peek too much. The growth looks more dramatic and impressive if you only look once a day! Be sure the ice cream tub has some air holes. Colonizing substrate doesn't need much fresh air - but it does need some. Stagnant moist air will very frequently (and very quickly) grow cobweb.

Thanks everyone will try to look every few days the ice cream tubs has 6 holes each covered with micropore tape and only about a table spoon of coffee in the water it soaked in. Cheered me up to know that the whole rice cake i crumbled was colonized in the middle (and not just a shell holding a evil green gooey centre ). Thanx
