swim has noticed a "hair gel" like substance on sections of certain cakes following a recent dunk.... any concerns out there based on this description?

It's bacteria and stress to the cakes. Just rinse the cakes off well under the faucet after the dunk. To prevent that, just use a drop of bleach in the dunk water. 1 drop and that's it. They're fine, don't worry.
