![]() | proper drying
foaf was wondering if improper drying could influence potency? laid out on a screen, in a room w/ ceiling fan going on medium/high for about the past 3 days. foaf says that they seem dry enough, but was wondering what entitles a mushroom to be "cracker dry"....

You probably should put the fruits in a dessicant chamber (DampRid, silica gels, etc) for a day or so if you want to store them. If they are rubbery at all, they are not cracker dry--should break like a cracker. If you are going to eat them, you are good. As far as potency loss, unless you bake them in a stove at really high temps or freeze them, you should be fine. |

I air dry for 3-4 days and then dessicant dry for storage. Cracker dry means that any part of the mushroom you bend, stem or cap, will snap like a cracker. See also bone dry...

faof says that they will crack when bent in some, but just flex in others.... thinks one more 12-16 hour fan dry will do the trick. does anyone find that completely drying w/o a desiccant is not possible?

If your relative humidity is too high, they will never dry completely.., you could put them in the oven on low for 10 minutes with the door ajar.

My tiny pan. cambodgiensis (which obviously are much easier to dry than fat cubes) never seem to get cracker dry no matter how much I dry them. I use a fan, and the humidity is low here. Then keep in a sealed jar with 2-3 silica gel bags. I guess there must be something else that keeps them elastic besides water. As far as I remember the cubes I have grown do become much stiffer when dry, but I wonder how much it might have to do with the thickness of stems etc.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Mine get completely cracker dry with just a fan but it is not very humid here at all. In a humid place you would probably need a dessicant chamber of some sort.

not a humid environment at all... desiccant chamber would probably be way beneficial for foaf. trying to estimate how much longer to wait... remaining water weight + remaining verm = inaccurate dosages. trying to come up w/ a clever way to remove verm more effectively....
