![]() ![]() | Dry sub
Just got my coir/verm sub out of the oven from pasteurizing. (The internal temp got higher than desired). I brought it to field capacity before putting in the oven but should have made it a little more moist to compensate for being in the oven for now it seems a little dry. Tomorrow when cooled, should I add some distilled water to moisten it up a little before adding the spawn?

You should be safe adding water back to it. Just don't add too much and over wet it. A little too dry is better than a little too moist.

I ALWAYS let grain recover before spawning it. That is one of the things I'm religious about. Not only does it make spawning safer, every so often the grain doesn't recover because of an unseen bacterial infection.

Yep when I made my last tub I had 6 quarts of spawn. Shook all of em and waited about 30 hours. Checked em and one didn't recover. I took it outside and sniffed it and it had a light bacterial smell to it. Listen to BB he knows his shit.

Thanks, Gadget. We does what we cans! Hip clued me letting the grain rest after breaking it up. I integrated that as a purity test into my grain slurry Tek (modified from Fahtster's Tek) only to discover that beating the myc up also makes it grow thicker - better slurries. I got the slurry idea from Stamets' The Mushroom Cultivator. Though his Tek was to use sterile tissue macerated in an Ederbach blender.

When I make up trays and put them in tubs, I am careful to watch for any change in sub moisture. I start misting the sub 2 days after I make it to ensure it stays nice and moist, as well as to keep the RH up in the tubs. Best of luck
