Reishi Plug Spawn on Hardwood Logs

Here is a project I started back in April.

Plugged these 3 logs with Ganoderma lucidum
culture on spiral cut wooden dowels. For months,
I watched and watered and nothing happened.

Last week I gave these logs a 24 hr dunk in
large buckets of water. I guess they liked that.

Two days ago I noticed some white growth on
2 of the logs. Maybe this is really going to work
after all???

the three logs
spray painted "r" to keep track

not a great picture but you can see a wax
covered spawn plug hole in center of the
picture

this looks like myc to me???

I'm encouraged to see this growth, finally.
Let's hope it's the Reishi I plugged em with.

Obviously, these won't be fruiting this year.
I wonder if they can make it thru the winter.

Cheers

stamets recommends that reishi logs be half-buried in damp sand or soil to retain moisture. you may want to try that over the winter?

Don't let them hard freeze - not good for 'em. They would be fine in the basement in the dark, though.

Greenmeanie makes a good point - how are you keeping the logs moistened?

They are stacked in the shade under some
trees. They get watered every few days during
dry spells.

Don't want them inside for the winter. There are
ants and creepy critters on em. Maybe dig a hole
and cover with straw and a tarp? Not sure if
even that will help, frost line here is 42 inches.

Last week I figured they weren't taking off
anyway so I didn't really have a winter plan.
Now that I see signs of life I have to rethink.
