Rye grain can be easily prepared by putting a cup in a quart jar dry then adding 2/3rds to 3/4ths of a cup of water, pcing and then shaking when cool to distribute the moisture.
If one were to do the same thing with popcorn or wild bird seed, how much water would they use for each cup of substrate?
What kind of popcorn are you supposed to use? I get rye at a health food store so Im sure they have it
What kind of wild bird seed is supposed to be used? Any generic mix?

I use white popcorn that I buy at the grocery store in 2# bags. Last time there the clerk asked me what I was going to do with all that (10 bags) popcorn. I mumbled something about a party...
What I do to prepare the grain is put it in a small PC and cover it with at least 1" of water. Then I PC at 15# for 30 minutes. The corn is fully hydrated and ready to drain and dry before putting it into jars. Then I just PC for an hour as usual. It's quick and simple.

That is about what I do. You can use any type of popcorn as long as it's not coated with butter or oil (of course). I buy yellow popcorn either from a grocery store or a big box like Wal-Mart. If you are a Sam's Club member, you can get 50 lb. containers.
