Your standard supplemented sawdust mix is the most common. I have seen good success with compost though as well. Also consider using a casing layer, just recently I started casing my blocks and have found it makes a big difference.

Oysters do well on anything with very high levels of cellulose, so wood fibers, dried grasses/straw, shredded newspaper will all work. I normally use shredded newspaper since it's free and a cool way to recycle. I have heard that oysters grown on straw don't taste as good, but i have not experienced this myself.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | hyphaenation is the man when it comes to working with card, but i found that cutting cardboard up into little pieces can be a real pain in the ass. it can also cause pretty nasty blisters. so a good way to proccess lots of card is to soak the card in a plastic tub, with warm water, and then swoosh it around between your finger tips until soft. then if you want a smooth sub you could blend with a hand blender till its nice and pastey. Next you need to drain it and then squeeze out all that extra moisture to get your field capacity rite. An old T shirt does this task well. credit to hyphaenation for his pioneering puck tek work http://forums.mycotopia.net/photo-ga...substrate.html (Puck Tek -- Pressed Substrate)

Try a blender with soaked cardboard. It really rocks. You can mix it with whaterever you want and then pour it over a sieve screen to drain. Unlimited things you can do with cardboard once you get working with it. I noticed the grey egg carton type cardboard works especially good.

Oyster's grow well on a lot of substrates as mentioned. Even well weathered horse manure and compost works great as well. If you decide to use use paper or cardboard, use a lot. Make a big block so there's plenty of substrate weight to support a good flush. http://forums.mycotopia.net/photo-ga...s-compost.html (King's on compost)

chopped paper should be fine zigan. ill see if i can find a good tek that you may be interested in reading. psy bearknot so far my ko's are doing great but this was from a clone. you might want to try working with some agar just so you can guarantee your grows. i use mea agar which king oysters seem to really like but i should think any nutritient rich substance should sustain growth. if it helps my kings were grown on rice cakes and spawned to straw. pics so far. ![]() ![]() think ill be harvesting these by tuesday

It's not very difficult to make home made filters for bags... you just need some RTV II silicone, tyvek, and packing tape. Cut out the hole where you want your filter (be careful not to do sharp angles as this can make a weak point for the plastic to tear at) make a thin line around the outside of the hole on the outside of the bag with the silicone, then paste on your cut-to-fit tyvek filter patch. Let it cure over night, then secure the edges with the packing tape so that the silicone doesn't peel off of the plastic while you're handling the bag. Easy to make an injection port too-- put a glob of silicone on the bag, let it cure then put a piece of tape over it. ![]() You can get RTV II silicone at any hardware store.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | why cant you find bleach? im not sure but i think i remember something about sodium hypo chlorite being the active ingredient in bleach don’t quote me on that though. You should be able to find bleach at virtually any supermarket or hard wear store. failing that you could allways give the paper a hot water pasteurisation.
