Contamination Description on Shiitake Block.

ive got a shiitake nugget that is roughly 97% colonised and almost ready to fruit. But in the last day or so a brown spot has appeared on the top of the substrait. and when i touch it through the plastic, brown moisture dribbles down the substrait. im thinking of bleach bathing it then putting it inside a terrarium separate to the rest of my grows and monitoring it. but i was hoping to get some insight as to what it might be. i cant take any pics yet as the bagg is stopping me from getting one worth posting but if it shows its self after the bleach dunk i will post one for iding purposes.

Shiitakes like to 'bark over' where they develop a leathery dark brown skin. Sometimes it happens before fruiting, sometimes not depending on what sub strain you might be using and some other factors. The only way we can tell if that's what's going on is to see a picture.

its ok now ive looked some stuff up and im 80% sure that it is just the mycelium barking over. the reason i was getting worried was that at first it looked like a brown dust spot that resembled a spore colony, much like trichoderma. but now it has filed out and is starting to look allot like the pics ive seen in the vaults so ive stopped craping my pants now. ill still post a pic or two if you don’t mind inspecting it for me.

Cool beans dude. When my shiitake blocks first started barking over i had the same reaction.

Pics to confirm would be good though. Hopefully Myc will stop in to comment as well, he is the shiitake master.
